Are you working on 32bit Max or 64bit? If you are using 64bit, try 32bit.

Also new - maybe this has something to do with "snippets" vs "clips" implementation in new Max 7?

It's not actually a bug, rather something specific to used technology. 64bit version of Max on Windows is using native Windows video engine, instead of Apple QuickTime (which is available only in 32bit version). So 64bit version Max on Windows can handle video formats supported only by this "inner" Windows routines (e.g. WMV).-

for windows 64 video support, you should check out the viddll-beta package, available via the Max 7.1 package manager.
