Have you tried switching the theme in Max 8?

Choose Max > Preferences to open the Preferences window

Navigate to the Interface tab of the Preferences window. You'll find a listing for Color Theme.

Try choosing light from the pull-down menu and see if that's not an improvement for you.

I have to do that for each window - can't just set the preference color once for my entire usage of the patch (many windows are used during performance). What can I do, stop the performance for this new window to reset the color scheme? Why not for all the patch?

You can set your default theme in the preferences. In the 'Interface' section, there's a place you cn set your color theme.

Depending on your operating system, there are many options to assist you with this.

On MacOS its in: System Preferences > Accessibility > Display
