Excuse me if this is too baby of a question but I don't understand why this patch doesn't work.

How does the "sel: bang if Input Matches selectors" function of select work? I want this button to trigger if any of the values i've entered are matched but nothing happens when i do that. I guess i could route each individual number's port to the same button port and it'll bang on each matched number but that's really messy and tedious.

Sorry for making the post really long with code format but I don't know how to use that spoiler style function where you can paste in a Max patch's code and have it be hidden until you click.

that is a very good question. officially it should support mixing data types.

oh my gosh how embarassing. i thought that an "argument" was some sort of like... command for the select object that could be used to consolidate matching of data to the following values. that is not the case. the arguments are the values that follow. it was interpreting "selectors" as a value to be matched... i see this now by looking at how you simply used the words "foo" and "bar" as arguments. i will appropriately don the dunce cap now.

and in case you actually wanted to check for "bang if it is foo OR bar" you can still just connect more than one [sel] outputs - or all of them - to the same target.

btw. a very common patching error is the misuse of the 

following the cables and actually read the inlet and outlet descriptions they are connected to can help a lot while debugging, even if you think you know your objects.
