LF MAX/MSP Workshops in Berlin or private lessons

Ken Yamamoto's icon

Hi forum-folks,

I am looking to participate in MAX/MSP workshops in Berlin but can't find anything.
Does anybody know where I could find dates/groups/help?

If not: Is there anyone in Berlin who would be ready to teach some private lessons?

Yes that is a cool idea. I would like to attend a class with Max/ Jitter material too.
There are pretty good courses in Paris at IRCAM but most courses are in french.
Something in Berlin would be great.

There used to be courses offered at the "Elektronisches Studio" at the TU Berlin, with Thomas Selig teaching. But that was a while ago, I don't know if they're still being offered. With the changes to the studio since the previous director retired (and budget cuts, and everything else), I just have no idea.

There also used to be courses offered at the UdK Berlin, by someone I know quite well. Those were cut a long time ago, both from budget constraints and the notion that other software might be more relevant. (The Max/MSP courses were also sometimes held in English, depending on what was more convenient for those on the course.)

The other obvious suspect would be the studio at the Hanns-Eisler music college, but I think they are more strongly (entirely?) focused on Supercollider.

Finally, there had been talk a while ago about running a course at NK, but that never quite came to fruition. Although N.K. is no longer functioning as a venue, there are still a collective organizing projects, and if there were interest, they might well respond by finding a way to put something together. There is also a slight chance that the studios for electroacoustic music at either the UdK or TUB might think about organizing courses if there were interest from students. Courses at those places are often open to interested persons from outside the school, but there would have to be enough internal interest to justify offering a course.

Hi, I live in Berlin. I did a few private lessons in the past, and a workshop in NK.
I mostly work with jitter, very few msp stuff. I can teach the basic msp things but not more.
email me at keyframed@gmail.com (the email @keyframed.org is broken...)

Best,

Yoann

ps: you can see things/ projects here: https://vimeo.com/keyframed/albums

pretty nice works, Yoann!

@Peter thank you for your insights.
It seems to me a little bit strange, that there is is little to none educational practice regarding Max/MSP/Jitter in Germany. Of course there are some universities who are offering courses, but often they are restricted to their students. The provided tutorials by Cycling74 are well done, but to me it seems that learning Max7 is so much easier with others in classroom situation, than doing tutorials with Youtube or the excellent Books "Electronic Music and Sound Design" Vol1 & 2.
Max Users are probably such a small minority that economical added value is not worth the efforts.

@Yoann Thank you. I´ll think about your offer.

Thank you all for the insights and information!
What a shame, right? Berlin as a center of arts and music… and no regular MAX sessions/workshops.
I know there are online tutorials etc. but for me teaching/learning works best with a teacher/student in a classroom situation.
I own Vol.1 of "Electronic Music and Sound Design" but I think it would be more effective for me to ask specific questions about what I am planning to do.

Thank you all. Maybe we could post here if we find out specific dates/places/workshops etc.

Best

Hi Ken!

Are you still interested in a max/msp workshop? What are the subjects you are looking for?

I work as a teacher in the field of electronic music production (for example here: https://www.ableton.com/de/education/institutional-profiles/crea/). I finished my education here:

http://www.sonology.org/education (a lot of max/msp, supercollider, etc. I preferred Max)

I teach max/msp.

I'll be in Berlin the coming months on a regular basis so maybe we can work something out. And if more people are interested we might try to rent a place.. :)

Hey you, yes I'll teach that workshop early August + another one early September.
All infos are here: http://www.cc4av.info/2016/berlin-maxmsp

Create your live A/V system using Ableton Live + MaxMSP + Jitter ➝ August 2 - 6
In this workshop we will be working on personal projects that are live audio-visual performances. We will be using using Ableton Live as a sound and data source, and will make it communicate with MaxMSP. We will be exploring advanced audio-analyzing strategies, and will be analyzing specific music data. Then we will be learning how to use this data to generate & alter visuals in a live performance context. This information will give an insight on how to use these kinds of setups for autonomous audio-reactive visuals and installations.

{ Day 1 }
Introduction to main features of Ableton Live & MaxMSP software, including examples related to an audio-reactive visual system design.
Preparation of a global liveset and a basic Jitter patch for starting communication.
Soundflower & Jack inter-application audio-routing, MIDI Yoke & IAC Bus.
{ Day 2 }
Designing small visuals systems in Jitter.
Using pre-existing videos, webcam flow.
Using 3D realtime rendering.
{ Day 3 }
Generating and altering visuals:
Using music data (MIDI, Tempo, OSC),
Extracting and using sound descriptors (centroid, frequency peaks, noisiness & much more).
{ Day 4 }
Optimizing data & sound routing specifically for live performance.
{ Day 5 }
Finalizing our systems and preparing for a small audiovisual performance.

Designing an audio-visual installation using MaxMSP + Jitter ➝ September 6 - 10
In this workshop we will be creating audio-visual installations and learning technical strategies for defining our needs and what we can explore, test & build using MaxMSP framework.
We will be talking about each part of MaxMSP starting from core (Max) to signals (MSP) and visuals (Jitter), as well as exploring how we can make the sound related to visuals or the visuals related to sound. We will be using sensors in order to sense the world using MaxMSP and, in the reverse order, we will be altering the physical world by using light & DMX, motors.
Every workshop day will be consisting of teaching, examples and descriptions. Each participant will be working on his/her own system and will be assisted and advised by the workshop holder.
Feel free to bring any ideas you have related to the topic. If you want to connect your openFrameworks, Processing or Arduino projects to MaxMSP, the workshop holder will help you to accomplish that.

{ Day 1 }
Fundamentals of MaxMSP framework: Max, MSP, Jitter, Gen (gen~, jit.gen and pix).
{ Day 2 }
Visualizing data & sound.
Examples & participants’ own design.
{ Day 3 }
Sonifying data & visuals.
Examples & participants’ own design.
{ Day 4 }
Sensing the world (physical computing).
Examples & participants’ own design.
{ Day 5 }
Finalizing our systems and preparing for a small showcase / exhibition.
Each participants will explain and run his/her piece.
