Max audio freezing & crashing while DSP running
Hello all,
I’ve got a frustrating problem I’ve been considering writing to Cycling 74 support about. I’ve searched around and haven’t found anything about this particular problem, so I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this.
For everyone’s info, I’m running Max 7 (latest version before Max 8) on a 2015 Touchbar MacBook Pro, 3.15 GHz processor, 8 GB RAM.
I have this large patch I’ve been working on — it’s a vocal harmonizer, so it involves several instances of a PSOLA~ external and several pfft~s. Even with everything running, the DSP window shows CPU usage somewhere in the range of 15 to 25%, and I rarely see it above 30%. However, sometimes while DSP is running, audio will suddenly cut out (ie, go silent), and Max will stop responding and I have to force quit. I’ve never noticed a spike in CPU usage before or during the time when Max freezes.
The freezes happen with scheduler in overdrive or not, and with audio interrupt on or off. I’ve played around with the I/O and signal vector sizes, large and small values for each, etc, and freezes have happened in almost every combination of DSP settings. I’m really confused as to what is causing this.
I’ve tried building an application from the patch, and the application has not frozen on me yet.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this??
Also — once I started noticing the issue, I completely removed and reinstalled Max 7, but the issue persists.
Max 8 is also installed on my laptop, but the patch is written and running in Max 7. (The PSOLA~ external I’m using is custom and only works in Max 7, not Max 8.)
