Max editor not opening from Live

I've seen some posts on this problem but I'm not sure how to resolve it with my macOS 10.12 system –

Opening a M4L patch from Ableton Live (Open in editor) opens Max but not the device itself – the info bar in Live says "Starting Max Editor...." even after Max opens, sans the targeted patch. In El Capitan and earlier, it seemed to be fixed by Repairing Disk Permissions but this doesn't work in Sierra (though I did try it using a Terminal command as well). I also tried trashing the preferences folder.

Any ideas? Running Ableton Live Suite 9.7 and Max 7.3.4 on macOS 10.12.5.

For anyone having the same problem...I received a solution from Cycling '74. For some reason my hosts file was missing some entries (maybe some mucking about I did a long time ago).

Navigate to /etc/hosts and make sure the file has the default code in it:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
