Mixer latency and ramp time
Does anyone know how Max's internal Mixer works? As far as I can tell, when I enable mixer latency, the patcher clicks:
mixer latency enable: 'on'
mixer crossfade ramp time: 30
whereas the following setting causes a smooth fadein-fadeout:
mixer latency enable: 'off'
mixer crossfade ramp time: 30
What's up? Crazy pills? This is Max 8 on a macbook.
Interesting. Do you have a test patch / procedure? What's you OSX version number?
I'm running 10.11 and Max 8. Below, I expected Enable Mixer Crossfade: On to smooth audio starts and stops but it seems to be the other way around.
1. Under Max Preferences:
Enable Mixer Crossfade: Off
Mixer Crossfade Latency: 100.
Mixer Crossfade Ramp Time 50..
2. Restart Max for preferences to take effect. Note fadein/fadeout is correct.
3. Stop/start the patcher.
4. Compare with:
Enable Mixer Crossfade: On
Mixer Crossfade Latency: 100.
Mixer Crossfade Ramp Time 50.
5. Is fadeout occurring? I hear pops when I stop the dac~.
I may be misunderstanding how these three settings interact but patcher audio start and stop fades seem to work best when Mixer Crossfade is disabled.
Hey,
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I've been having the same issue for a long time, tried with Max 8 in both Windows and Mac and indeed, if the crossfading is off but the Latency and Ramp times are high I get smooth "fade to zero" and "fade back in", but if Enable Mixer Crossfade is on I just get clicks and no apparent crossfading.
Just updated to 8.6.1 and the issue is still the same.
Any news on this?
James, you're right, it sounds like "on" and "off" are reversed in the "Enable Mixer Crossfade".
What Chris described above is different, he is talking about turning on/off the Audio Processing, which, I think, is not the goal of the Mixer Crossfade - Mixer crossfade is more for live coding, etc.
I'm sending to support.
