Novation Launch Control becomes unresponsive
Hey all,
I've got a performance piece running on a Novation Launch Control, an Akai APC Mini, and Max 7.1 on a Macbook Pro, OSX 10.10.5. The APC Mini runs fine for hours on end. The Launch Control, however, will randomly freeze up - become unresponsive and Max no longer sees MIDI coming in from the device (using the MIDI Tester window). The two methods I've uncovered to "un-freeze" the unit are to unplug the USB and re-plug it or, in the Mac Audio MIDI Setup utility, click "Rescan MIDI". Usually, the freezing takes an hour or so for it first to pop up, but after it happens once, it can happen again within...like, 5 seconds. Or it can take 10 minutes. It seems totally random. It has happened on two different computers (though I don't have the specs for the other computer) but it eventually stopped happening on the other computer (???)
Sorry, I don't have the most complete information on this issue, as we're in performance now, so there isn't a ton of time to troubleshoot while I'm onstage performing.
Anyone have any thoughts? I'm reticent to update anything - Max or the Launch Control - in case it only makes things much much worse, but the device froze on me 8 times tonight in a 90 minute piece, so I'd REALLY like to figure out what's going on.
Does Max still see the device, but just no MIDI?
Does the device still appear in your Audio/MIDI setup?
Using a hub? And if so is it powered?
Honestly sounds more like an issue with the cable/connection.

I believe that yes, Max still sees the device, but no MIDI. Device definitely still appears in the Audio MIDI Setup window. No hub, but I am always using the same USB port for the Launch Control and a different port for the Akai board.
Sounds like hardware issue, not a Max issue. Does the device send MIDI in other programs after it becomes unresponsive (MIDI monitor is a good troubleshooting tool).
I have exactly the same problem. I work with OS X 10.11.1
The device works fine with Ableton Live, but not with Max. Randomly, it disappears.
The usb cable is new.
Try to turn overdrive off/on in Max and see if it works again.
I had some sucess with midi in max becoming sluggish after a
certain time.

It did indeed. Novation sent me a new USB cable that had a toroid in-line (my original one didn't) and I haven't had an issue since.
Aha... I have a few of those.
