Output to multiple speakers: 1 channel is coming out of more than 1 speaker?

I've got a 5.1 set up with an Alienware Aurora R7 PC, running Windows 10 and the Creative Sound Blaster Z soundcard.

Currently I have 4 speakers, Front L/R and Surround L/R hooked up and testing through the Sound Blaster software are coming out of the correct outputs.

In Max MSP I have sounds set up to come out of 'dac 1 2' and 'dac 3 4'. Sending signals to 2, 3 and 4 come out as expected and just those channels, but if I send a signal to 1 it comes out of 1 but I'm also getting it in other channels (3/4).

My output are set as
1: Front L/R
2: Front L/R
3: Surround L/R
4: Surround L/R

Has anyone come across this behaviour before/any suggestions? I've made sure that no signal is sent to 2 3 4 and all sounds are mono but I still get this bleed into the other channels..

It sounds to me it may be a setting/configuration issue on the driver/software(mixer?) of your soundcard....
You could create a file with two different test tone on the L/R channels and test on a simple media player like VLC if the channels are properly separated.
