[Social] I'm an enthusiastic beginner, and I really like Max. Wanna chat?
Hey! This might seem like a quirky forum topic, and it might very well be, but I couldn't find any "social" forum here, or think of any better place to ask, so please bear with me.
So I've been patching since approximately last summer with my class at my university. I was hanging in there for about half a year, doing my homework, when I suddenly realised that I do really love this program. The last months I've surpassed my class by a large margin, and now I'm working with Max almost every day. As you might guess, my classmates aren't as enthusiastic and geeky as I am, so I'm kind of looking for a "sparring partner" or two, as I have a lot of ideas and projects, and would like to share my thoughts and ideas with someone.
TL;DR: Would anyone here want to chat about ideas and craft in the Max/MSP/Jitter/gen universe, beyond bug fixing and discussion on the forums? I've been patching for about 9 months.
This felt kinda awkward to put out there, as I've seen nothing similar here yet. I hope this is not too far of a stretch, cheers!
Hey Jonas
welcome! There was a forum thread recently, in relation to private messaging etc, and someone referred to a web chat resource for Max enthusiasts; maybe someone else reading this will remember exactly where it is.
Yeah, sometimes the forum can get a bit too focused on technical help, occasionally artistic questions come up, and there is the Miscellaneous sub-forum.
:)

hi jonas,
i could be up for that. how were you hoping to communicate, email or something?
dave
@Mccloskey : are you refering to irc chat ? in that case there is #maxmsp on irc.freenode.net ; there is also #muffwiggler on irc.mibbit.net, which is very active and filled with some Max enthusiasts but it's mainly about analog synthesizers ; and there was supposed to be a #max/msp on irc.undernet.net
But the purely maxmsp irc channels were not very active when i used to go there. I don't know, maybe a direct link from the c74 website would result in an usage increase ?
Hey Jonas, depending on where you are based, maybe you can hit up these folks:
(Look at that, I'm linking to the wiki!)
Thanks for answering, guys!
That's great, Dave! Honestly, I think the most painless way to communicate over the web right now is facebook chat. Do you mind that? My facebook URL is in my profile, for anyone that would want it. If anyone would want to chat, but wants to refrain to use facebook, I could provide my skype address too.
It's been a while since I used IRC, but if there's an active channel there I would go for it. Seems like most rooms tend to die over time, though.
Edit: Whoah, thanks Ginger! I guess I should start visiting the wiki too. This seems like a great resource when you're brewing on something big with Max.
I'm fairly certain consultants aren't what's needed here, but a social network instead, yeah?
I keep meaning to get back into IRC but I just... can't really. I used to be very active on #muffwiggler which I started together with Dennis, aka mono/poly on mw. IDK, all that G.A.S. wasn't good for me, I think.
To be honest, I think "consultants" is an odd term to use, but in the context of looking for like-minded individuals, I thought I'd post the link as a suggestion.
I also agree that it's great to see discussions about projects and ideas happening here on the forum too, not just bug fixes and tech questions.
Well it's great that you did :) I didn't mean it wasn't, we really do tend to isolate ourselves, and any connection to the world around us in this way is really useful.
I'll have a good look and see how I can sign myself up, too :D
Jonas, I've added a "social" topic label to your thread. Hope you don't mind!
A way to chat for beginner is a very good idea!
But does it have to be on FB?
On the other hand, I haven´t used IRC in a very long time.

I may have said this before but, "nonlocality" has THE coolest avatar. Ever.
And "to the sun" has the coolest handle btw
Brendan
Facebook is one possibility, but I think Skype might be another good choice. Besides it not being the worlds best program, it's still pretty neat to chat in, and it has good possibilities for chatting one to one, as well as in groups. I guess there are better things out there too, but the main upside of facebook and skype is that most people have one, and it's accessible.
I don't mind at all, Ginger, I too would if I could.
thanks brendan, it's an amazing show!
jonas, i already sent you a message on facebook, though skype or facebook works for me. anyway, i'm curious to hear about your ideas and hope i can be of help!
For some reason I haven't received any message.. Are you sure you got the right link? Try this one
Maybe I could try to message you if it really doesn't work.
this forum could use a PM system! i'm not sure how the messaging works but it tells me it went to your "other" folder, as we're not friends. i've added you as a friend now (dave yeh).
this forum could use a PM system!

i've noticed there is a max facebook page :

i’ve noticed there is a max facebook page :

I was unable to join this group (even after trying to contact admins directly): my request is still 'pending' after several months... :(
that is weird Valery ; it might be because you were mistaken for a potential spambot... did you try to re-request to join the group ?
@Floating Point : the last one is the maxmsp hashtag, didn't know hashtags were working on facebook !...
@vichug: didn’t know hashtags were working on facebook
neither did I until today-- maybe a new thing
it might be because you were mistaken for a potential spambot… did you try to re-request to join the group ?
Yes. Right now I re-requested to join once again and have sent the messages to both of the admins...
I just tried to re-request to join the group, and I got accepted instantly. Btw, I've chatted a bunch with nonlocality, and it's been so fruitful for me so far! I encourage everyone to be social about their craft in Max.
Going to do a google Hangout tonight (CET), hoping to make that a sunday tradition.
in 2015, ginger found the wiki.
