VIVO Media Arts Centre is offering an Intro to Sonification workshop with Max MSP in Vancouver, BC Canada. Come to the workshops and make cool stuff with local artists! You can register for it here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/sonification-with-max-msp-and-the-large-hadron-collider-tickets-25324179302

This workshop will introduce students to sonification - the practice of transforming data into sound. Students will learn to transform data into sound using various data manipulation techniques in combination with basic audio synthesis.

The European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) has recently published experimental data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland. The LHC is designed to create proton collisions at speeds close to the speed of light. This data can give us valuable insight into the conditions in which the universe was created and has led to the discovery of the Higgs-boson 4 years ago.

Max MSP is a node-based visual programming language known for its accessibility and ease of use. It is popular among artists and can be learned easily without any prior programming experience.

In this workshop, students will use the data published by CERN as a foundation for their sonic composition. To accomplish this the students will learn simple signal processing and audio synthesis techniques in Max MSP and learn to transform data to fit the signal processing domain.
Programming experience is not required for this workshop but a strong interest in sound and/or science is beneficial.
Strongly recommended that you bring your own laptop to the workshop. There are computers available if needed.
