I'm currently editing this max patch to try to use the live gain audio signal, scale it to between 0. & 2. and use that signal as the input for speed for the same audio file. So the amplitude controls the speed. It's for an art project. Is this even possible or will it just crash? I'm struggling to work it out. I'm not very good with Max.

...but it can't be sample-accurate in order to avoid instantaneous feedback... needs to convert signal into float numbers...

also, the left-outlet of 'number~' doesn't output the way it says it would unless you switch the input mode, so i connected the live-gain~ straight to scale~ to bypass that whole mess. and then the right-outlet of number~ in that mode will output the floating-point version of the signal which you can use for speed(if none of this makes sense in words, just check out the version of your patch i pasted above to see what i mean :).

something to watch out for: if you have a file with pure 0 silence in it, the speed will drop to 0 and won't play forward from there.
