New Research Study: Evaluating Computer-Assisted Music Composition in Calliope﻿

Metacreation Lab for Creative Artificial Intelligence

 is conducting a research study on creative AI tools for music composition. Today, we are releasing, testing and evaluating a 

web environment for computer-assisted MIDI musical pattern generation. The system rests on MMM, our multi-track music machine model to generate, re-generate or fill-in completely new musical content based on existing ones and their instrumentation. In this way, you use existing musical content, yours or that of others, as a prompt for your generation requests. The interface offers controls for polyphony, note density and note length for each track of the music piece.

We seek to better evaluate the potential for adoption of such systems for novice/beginner as well as seasoned composers. More specifically, you will be asked to compose a short 4-track musical composition and to fill out a survey questionnaire at the end.

There is no pre-requisite for this study beyond a basic knowledge of music software (DAW) and MIDI. So, everyone is welcome even if you do not consider yourself a composer, but are interested in participating. A basic interest and familiarity with digital music composition will help, but no experience with making music is required. The entire study should take you around 2h. As per our research ethics approval, you must be 19+ years.

I've got a standalone app I've built in 8.2.0 and running on a Mac Mini M1 processor. When i run the standalone on the mac mini, I get the security "app would like to use the microphone" prompt on every start of the application, despite my having granted it, and every change i make to the audio status also brings up this prompt. if i quit out of the standalone, and check security preferences, i can see my standalone has been granted access to the microphone, but it still prompts me every start and every driver change i make.

Hey Jake! I can repro here and we will investigate. It just seems to be a problem on Big Sur (as far as I can tell).

hey Ben. yes--can confirm the security stuff is not an issue on my Mojave machine.

Hi, I think Big Sur tightens up security a bit more than Catalina and insists on a code-signed and properly entitled application for some types of persistent security permissions (like mic or camera). It's unclear from your post whether your app is signed/entitled with the "com.apple.security.device.audio-input" key set to true.

thanks pals for this help. it's been a minute since i've bundled to a standalone and didn't realize Apple had gotten so touchy. will attempt to code sign and try again.

I'm having issues distributing a standalone using a fork of an external (max-ble) which I compile myself.
I'm actually building the standalone on a 2015 macbook pro running catalina, and it doesn't work as expected on a recent M1 macbook running mac os 11, which of course I don't have access to.
I was still using Max 8.1.11 and everything worked fine except the scanning of BLE devices ([max-ble] seemed to work correctly but couldn't find any device), so I gave a try with Max 8.2.2 and apparently it doesn't even open any window anymore, except the console which doesn't display anything.
For information, I distribute the standalone by zipping it and uploading it to a public folder on my server.

Enabling the "rosetta" option on the standalone from the M1 apparently doesn't help in any case.

As suggested by Joshua, I tried to sign the standalone with the following Entitlements.plist file :

But then when I open the standalone on my machine, no object is found, everything is red and I get a load of error messages in the console, which seems to indicate that my entitlements somehow override default entitlements applied during the standalone build process.
Any further hints on the use of an entitlements file to sign a standalone ?
Any other advice would be much appreciated too.

It looks like things were going better with Max 8.1.11 (and the standalone size was much smaller : 64 Mo with Max 8.1.11 compared to 235 Mo with Max 8.2.2), so meanwhile I'll give another try with it and double check with my standalone user if he didn't do anything that could have prevented BLE devices to be discoverable.

This is less of a bug and more of an open-ended issue which I am not 100% sure is related to the SDK directly but after a lot of deliberating and A/B compiling my feeling is that code signing behaviour has somehow changed from the update.

When building a set of externals previously with cmake and make I would produce binaries which were not code signed. I could verify this in my shell with this:

codesign -dv --verbose=4 fluid.ampgate\~.mxo

fluid.ampgate~.mxo/: code object is not signed at all

Now though, after doing nothing except updating the SDK I get binaries which when checked with the aforementioned invocation report that they are code signed:

Are you building from an updated version of Xcode? that would be my first guess as to the difference. AFAICT we are not introducing any signing in our cmake scripts (it's not even clear to me that you are using the cmake scripts).

Our build chain is a little bit custom but obviously uses the SDK. I am using Xcode 12.5.1 and have not updated it recently. However, I recently created a new developer signature in Xcode to build an iPlug2 project and I wonder if that is causing things to go wacky. I will dig deeper my end to see if I can get into the details.

FWIW, I ran back across this whilst trying to retrieve something I posted a long time ago. Indeed this was the issue, if for any reason someone came across this in the future.

I am having an odd issue with print messages coming out of JS. 

I have lists coming out of JS, but they do not print when fed into the print object, unless I also send it a bang. See attached patch, script and movie that shows this. The movie is made with an older beta, but I also checked on the most recent beta (info appended), and had the same result.
