New Research Study: Evaluating Computer-Assisted Music Composition in Calliope﻿

Metacreation Lab for Creative Artificial Intelligence

 is conducting a research study on creative AI tools for music composition. Today, we are releasing, testing and evaluating a 

web environment for computer-assisted MIDI musical pattern generation. The system rests on MMM, our multi-track music machine model to generate, re-generate or fill-in completely new musical content based on existing ones and their instrumentation. In this way, you use existing musical content, yours or that of others, as a prompt for your generation requests. The interface offers controls for polyphony, note density and note length for each track of the music piece.

We seek to better evaluate the potential for adoption of such systems for novice/beginner as well as seasoned composers. More specifically, you will be asked to compose a short 4-track musical composition and to fill out a survey questionnaire at the end.

There is no pre-requisite for this study beyond a basic knowledge of music software (DAW) and MIDI. So, everyone is welcome even if you do not consider yourself a composer, but are interested in participating. A basic interest and familiarity with digital music composition will help, but no experience with making music is required. The entire study should take you around 2h. As per our research ethics approval, you must be 19+ years.

soooo, i removed all the packages in my packages folder and then reopened it and it was fine.  This was after previously quitting max several times and rebooting. I added all the packages back and restarted max and its still loading so call this one fixed.

Small thing but Autoconnect Positions By Mouse option in Preferences>Patching is inverted in my copy ("Beta Version 8.2.0 (ba4ca3ebc74) (x64 windows)"), when it is disabled Max creates new objects in the mouse position, when enabled it creates new objects immediately below the connected object.

Thanks for the report. Oddly, I think this has been an issue since 2014! 

After talking with a colleague, I realize that I've misunderstood the nature of this preference. What it means is that when enabled, a new object and connection will be created from the closest inlet/outlet to where the mouse is. The preference description is not worded correctly, and it points to the fact that we could probably refine this preference and patching mechanic in general. I'll be sure to get the wording of the description fixed up. Thanks again for the report!

I'm finding that creating a jit.world with gl3 enabled causes max to crash. Works so far with gl2. This happening on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), running macOS 11.4 (BigSur).

Hi Ethan, thanks for reporting this. I can't reproduce this issue on my MacBook Pro running 11.5. We have noticed some issues with the 11.4 OS, so I wonder if your crash is related to that. Could you try updating to 11.5 and see if that fixes the issue? If Max still crashes, please send us your support information, which is located in the About Max window. Click on "Copy support information to clipboard" and paste the results in your response. 

hey Ethan (and Ashley) I believe the gl3 package needs an update to support the 8.2 beta. I have just made public the 0.2.8 update to the gl3 package. So please try out that update before attempting anything further and let us know if that fixes things for you. thanks much.

Awesome, updated to 11.5.2 & once I updated the gl3 plugin it started working!

When resizing the browser window, it shows flashing black and white right and bottom borders.

Looks like the contents of the window can't keep up with the new window size.

Resize the browser windows by dragging one of its corners or edges.

Flashing borders. White when you enlarge the screen, black when you reduce the size.

Does not happen when patcher windows are resized.
