Hi! I'm trying to implement reverse delay on a different project that I have. Last week I have implemented different algorithms, but in all of them I have been dealing with weird clicks.To help demonstrate the problem I'm facing, I have build a very basic reverse delay here.... with a fixed buffer of sample rate size (so, 1 second), with variable time (difference between read and write starting position). Feedback control and mix between wet & dry. I've been using a single data object buffer, with poke and peek. I've tried different interpolations on peek, and have stick with linear or cubic. I also have a boundmode wrap at peek.

I'm attaching my code here, so you guys can check. The click is not SO pronounced... but I would like to remove it if possible.

So I've been working on this Gen~ stutter patch with the intent of building a DaisySeed powered guitar pedal, and while I've gotten the stutter effect to function as intended, I'm currently struggling to figure out why there's still an occasional pop/click sound.

I initially thought the issue might be stemming from either the phasor changing its rate along side the random number generator, a quick succession of envelopes depending on the threshold setting for resetting the phasor's rate or the poke/peek object storing and playing back the buffered sample. But nothing I alter seems to resolve the issue I've been having.

I even tried applying a heavy low pass filter as well to remove the click sound, as well as removing the effect entirely to diagnosis the issue, only hear the issue persisting with the dry signal portion of the patch as well. At this point I'm completely confused with what the issue might be. 

Here's a download for the max patch. It's not as noticeable on percussion audio files, but is very apparent on clean guitar samples. Any help diagnosing the issue and suggesting how to remedy it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! I've successfully managed to recreate pitch movement in a delay by changing the write and read index position. In hindsight my issue with this is that after the delay time has reached it's target, all pitching goes back to normal, because now the difference between read and write index is constant again and there is no more doppler effect. The only way to combat this is having a really long smoothing time between tempo changes but it seems inelegant.

I'm looking to fully recreate the effect of a slowed down tape:

When I change the delay time, the whole 'tape' changes tempo and all previously recorded sounds are staying pitched forever, only newly recorded sounds are at the 'correct' pitch. As I understand it, for this model, the read and write heads (index position) stay constant, and the delay time is only effected by the speed of the tape.

My thought process was therefore to keep the index positions at a constant difference, and only change the rate of the phasor writing and reading the data buffer.

I've found an amazing forum post that tackles the exact questionI have. I tried to implement everything but I failed to do so correctly. Maybe somebody with more gen/max knowledge would know of a better way to convert this explanation into gen.

I prob missed this in the forums and tutorials.

I have a master phasor outside Gen locked to Ableton, triggering stuff and resets to Gen phasors.

I was trying to use what~ and where~ to send something to Gen, perhaps a line before the reset.  Ideally I'd like to modify the last cycle 's speed in gen before the reset to try and reach .25 on a  downward slope to match the reset. Mainly very slow lfo's I'm dealing with.

Gen still hurts me abit, either from struggling to get used to the per sample world, or from smacking myself in forehead when I realize how simple something was the whole time. Putting my foam hat on for this one again.

 tutorial on using  mc.gen~ to write a granular synth. I haven't got very far however as the mc.gen~ window regularly crashes. 

It reports a huge list of errors like this:

gen_domain: dsp.gen: [string "gen2.PatcherToExpr.max"]:45: attempt to index local 'patcher' (a userdata value)
gen~: failed to compile patcher
gen_domain: dsp.gen: [string "-- main2.lua..."]:697: failed to compile genpatcher
gen~: failed to compile patcher

And then the mc.gen~ object resets to its default (a simple sum of its inputs).

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Sometimes porting C code to genexpr is pretty easy -- there's only a handful of gotchas in the differences of the language. But sometimes it is much trickier, if the original code uses constructs that are more difficult to replicate in gen (e.g. arrays of structs). And some parts may need to be in Max, e.g. if there's buffer loading, MIDI, preset loading, etc. 

That repo has a lot of code in it -- and it looks like a lot of that is application level. Isn't that repo an entire DAW?  Looks to me like the port of the MutableInstruments you mention are in this repo: https://github.com/VCVRack/AudibleInstruments 

Note that the original MutableInstruments (https://mutable-instruments.net) are covered by cc-by-sa 3.0 license, so anything derived from it would also need to honor those terms. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ More discussion about what VCV is doing here:

Based on that I'd recommend you contact the Mutable Instruments community first to get the go ahead. Other than that, the actual instruments vary in complexity, some look pretty straightforward to gen-ify, others may be much trickier (e.g. Clouds). 

Olivier' code is a really wonderful gift to the community and worth the dive.  You rarely get to see a full example of production code.

One thing to note is that Olivier's code was designed to run at specific sample rates, so things may sound a little different in VCV if the samplerate is lower than the module's original sample rate.  Any filters in the code with static, hard-coded coefficients would need to be recomp because they would be off in terms of frequency response.    (e.g. 500 Hz occurs at a different angle on the unit circle for 44100 and 96000)

I am experimenting with the technique described in the "gen~.dynamicexpr" patch in the gen examples folder (on-the-fly replacement of gen~ codebox code through patcher scripting). Unfortunately, I'm running into what seems to be a upper limit on the number of characters in the code string (from my testing, the limit seems to be at 4030 characters, including newline chars). I also tried to remove all whitespace characters from the code string, which did not help. Is there any way to circumvent this limit?

Hello, I'm trying to fit a gen~ regular patch filter into a codebox for a project, but seems to get an issue with the global structure. I certainly could use another filter structure but I'm still frustrated not understanding where the problem is (see patch attached). While the original patch gives a smooth filtered rendering of the input, the codebox versions output an infinitely increasing number. I tried to replicate literally the 'code' section of the original patch, then replace the History with a Delay function, but none works. Any idea?
