I'm working on a multichannel sound installation with the amplitude of each audio channel being controlled by the RGB values of specific points (X/Y) in a matrix (char, RGB Video). Which object(s) would you use for doing that? I imagine the solution is pretty easy, however I'm new to jitter and couldn't find anything on the web so far.

Check the jit.matrix helpfile by alt/option + clicking a jit.matrix object (or right click -> "Open jit.matrix Help"), the solution is here. Simply send the following message to a jit.matrix: "getcell X Y" where X and Y are the coordinates of the cell you want the value from. Then you get the value from the rightmost outlet of the jit.matrix.

I'm working on patch in Jitter containing a lot of text content.  Right now I'm using Jit.gl.text but i want to change some font and colour for individual characters within a sentence.

I know it's possible when using jit.lcd, but then i would have to rebuild the whole thing from the bottom.  Maybe it would possible to sort of print the jit.gl.text output onto some texture, but i wouldn't know how to do that...  Any option possible is in my interests, and help is very much needed:)  Thanks

I believe the new [jit.gl.textmult] is made for this purpose. Think of it as a [jit.gl.multiple] object, but for letters/words. [jit.gl.textmult] is actually a patcher encapsulating a js file and other objects, and looking into it, you can apparently address different font, color (or other basic gl3 parameters such as scale, position, rotation...) to individual letters/words.
This said, the object is not deeply documented and the helpfile does not seem to work. Good luck :)


I looked into the [jit.gl.textmult] helpfile and I managed to fix it (see patch below). The problem is that the input matrix does not match the order of the defined arguments. There definitely is some bug into the [jit.gl.textmult] object, I guess regarding how it handles its arguments. Maybe @federico-amazingmaxstuff or @Rob Ramirez should look into it!

But now that I'm a but more familiar with this object, I'm not sure that you can set different fonts for each text instance.

EDIT: it does work! Just send a list of all the fonts you want prepended with the word "font",  Such as: {font Arial "Comic Sans MS" Georgia} without the brackets. Then you need to re-send your text. The first word will be in Arial, second in Comic Sans, third in Georgia, fourth in Arial, and so on.

Thank you so much for the reply. I only scratched the surface of it, but I can see that Jit.gl.textmult is really powerfull. I'm wondering  if it's only working in 3D mode or is a there 2D option that i'm not able to find? The project I'm working contains a lot of words that is getting generated each second, and I dont think my mac would be able to handle all this in 3D.  

I've attached a screenshot so you can get an idea of the purpose and I'm looking for a solution that can highlight some single words.

About the 2D mode:
[jit.gl.textmult] is built around the regular [jit.gl.text] object (basically, [jit.gl.textmult] programmatically instanciates multiple [jit.gl.text] - you can find that logic in the js file found inside of [jit.gl.textmult]), so it could theoritically be possible to make it work in 2D mode (as there is one for [jit.gl.text]), but it's not the case yet.
I tried to modify the js file to simply force 2d mode of every [jit.gl.text] object it instanciates, but it does not work as is, so more modifications should be done. Maybe you can send a feature request as Rob suggested.

This said, the depth attribute does work, so you can send "depth 0" to [jit.gl.textmult] to get your text flat (but they're still 3D shapes though). You need to rebang the color matrix after that...

About lot of words getting generated each second:
First, [jit.gl.textmult] takes a lot of time to process a new list of words, so don't think about submitting a new list every second. If you already know every word that you will eventually display, you should better send all of them first, then hide the ones you don't want by shifting their position away from the camera. It is not trivial to do and require some basic matrix manipulation but it's doable.
It would be more simple and efficient to be able to control the "enable" attribute of each jit.gl.text, but it is not a feature of jit.gl.textmult yet. You can ask for it too!

If you don't know in advance every generated words, I think you should better kind of recreate your own [jit.gl.textmult] so that you can programmatically create new [jit.gl.text] without having to reinstanciate the old ones.

Thanks for an extremely helpful reply! I can tell that [jit.gl.textmult] have a hard time handling all that information, since i don't know the words in advance. Sadly,  my Java skills are limited, so I may consider submitting a feature request for either jit.gl.text or jit.gl.textmult.  However, upon a quick look at the jit.gl.textmult script , it appears that it may serve a different purpose. 

I'll get back when/if i find a suitable solution! Maybe with jit.lcd...

First, I was wrong when I said earlier that the helpfile for jit.gl.textmult was not working. In fact it was not working for me, as it appears to be a bug with only some GPUs (in my case the integrated graphics Intel UHD 630). I relaunched Max with the dedicated GPU, and tried on another computer with another GPU, and the helpfile works as expected with those, so sorry if that misleaded you as you most certainly did not encounter that issue! I submitted the issue and it's being investigated.

However, upon a quick look at the jit.gl.textmult script , it appears that it may serve a different purpose.

I am not so sure. Here are some heavily truncated extracts from multiple_text.js found inside of [jit.gl.textmult], with some extra comments I added:

There is also a lot of code that deals with the control matrices (for position, scale, color...), but I'm still struggling to get what's going on, and what makes the 2d mode to not work. But that problem hooked I guess so I might investigate a bit further.

Your specific case would require a lot of work to modify the existing [jit.gl.textmult] that would allow you to first instanciate a given number of [jit.gl.text], even with empty text, then dynamically populate them individually with your text as it comes. It should make the generation much faster.

Hey Rob, I'm trying to use jit.movie~ in Max 8.5.5 via VIDDLL 1.2.7 and getting the following errors when I load the jit.movie~.maxhelp patch.

Looks like another post you mention that import movie files directly into buffer~ lost with losing QuickTime 32bit support, so not sure what the best way forward is. Is there another recommended way these days to get audio from a movie file into a buffer~ for use with groove~ etc. ?

Hello! I think this is my first post in the forum, so thanks for reading. This is the scenario I'm imagining and what I couldn't achieve so far.  I have a video being played in loop and I want to play specific vertical stripes of that video, leaving the rest in plain black. For example, if I divide the screen in 5 (N) equal stripes, I could  show the 2nd and the 4rd stripes of the video and that would be seen as a black stripe, a stripe of the video, another black stripe, another stripe of the video and the last black stripe (0.2 to 0.4 and 0.6 to 0.8 would be the visible stripes, in normalized X-coordinate values). In order to do this I have a jit.gl.pix object with two inlets: in the left one the jit.gl.matrix, in the other one a unidimensional matrix with N numbers, that is the amount of stripes. For the scenario I just explained, that list would be 0 1 0 1 0.

After trying different approaches I ran into codebox. I have a function that crops the video, receiving the initial and the ending corners to crop:

The problem is that I want the amount of stripes and the number of black stripes completely dynamic, so that's why I added the unidimensional matrix with the columns that I want to show. In the end I'm just not understanding how the value of the cells in the second matrix is accessed and how I can use it to alter the first matrix.

I'm attaching the patch working in "manual" mode (hardcoded stripes inside the codebox) and some commented code that I tried.

You can just multiply (jit.op @op *) the jit.movie output with the slices-matrix output to achieve the desired effect.

To change the number of slices you can then alter the dimensions of the slices-matrix.

I'm trying to create a simple sine wave animation with a head and a tail for an online course I am taking.  I'm using a jit.mgraphics object to write to a jit.pwindow.  I naively thought that re-stroking in white over a location where I had previously stroked in black would cleanly clear the previous stroke, but I'm seeing weird artifacts (outlines) wherever I try to draw over where I've previously drawn.  I thought this might be related to anti-aliasing, but fsaa is turned off in the pwindow.  Any insight into why this happens (and more importantly, how to fix it)?

transparency requires @blend_enable 1 and @depth_enable 0 on the transparent objects. you likely want to set @layer to some value higher than the default of 0 so they draw last. You can then control opacity with the alpha value of the color attribute. Post a patch if that's not working.

With jit.gl.gridshape it works, but applying a texture on the object when I rotate it on the y axis changes the size of the texture, is it possible to dynamically manage the alpha of the color attribute?

On the jit.gl.model object it doesn't seem to work, applying the attributes @blend_enable 1 and @depth_enable 0 there is also a loss of samples of the 3Ds object that is loaded inside.

Ok with jit.gl.material attached to a jit.gl.model it's a bit more complicated. First for transparency with jit.gl.material you need to zero out the alpha value of all the material color components (mat_specular, etc) and then you can use mat_diffuse alpha to adjust overall transparency.

And when using with jit.gl.model to override the model file's material, you must set @material_mode 0. You may also want to use @cull_face 3 which will automatically draw back faces before front faces, which is useful for drawing shapes with transparency.

Thank you, you solved the previous problems, I have another question: If I add a background with jit.gl.environment, managing the alpha of the 3D objects obviously the layer of the object superimposed on the background remains, even when the alpha value is 0. Is there any way to not make this happen? That is, I would like the object to become totally transparent.

Had problems with obs studio! Disabling  attribute floating in jit.World solved my problems. Do not  need add spoutsender, no filters in obs and it works with drawing context.

In the past I used jit.qt.movie to export small snippets from large video files using the commands: newmovie, append, flatten and timecodes for the selection

but now with the new max version, jit.qt.movie is replaced by jit.movie + the avf engine and this method this does not work any longer

is there a similar way to do this with jit.movie ? or do i have to fall back on jit.record ?

I used jit.(qt).record earlier before i used the newmovie/append/flatten method, but i preferred the latter because it’s very elegant since it doesn’t recompress so its a lot quicker and has better image quality

yeah all that functionality got chopped many years ago with the deprecation of quicktime and removal of 32 bit application support in macos.

My recommendation is to learn how to use ffmpeg and call into it from shell. chatgpt can be quite useful in this.

Ah yes I know ffmpeg, i also use it. Didn't make that connection, was thinking about it a bit too much inside of the box ;)

Happy post RNBO day everyone, I've got some details and context on what the Jitter team has cooked up for the 8.5 update.

Top of the list, GLCore (or glcore) and what it's all about. With 8.5 we've done 2 things:

Renamed the formerly beta gl3 engine to glcore

Transitioned our default graphics engine from the legacy gl2 to the modern glcore.

The reason for the renaming is to better reflect the reality that most graphics cards will support OpenGL versions beyond version 3. The engine provides support for modern core profile OpenGL at whatever version your graphics card supports.


For existing gl3 users not much has changed in functionality (other than the new juicy bits described below). However the consequences extend beyond the technology. We now have a solid foundation for continuing our engine modernization and growth, and can fully document the new behavior and features. To that end there are a handful of new examples to check out in the glcore Examples Extras patch.

For gl2 users this is a significant but hopefully seamless change. We will publish more details on how best to utilize modern graphics engines and other ins and outs, and we strongly encourage contacting support with any issues. However if you wish to revert back to gl2 simply change your Graphics Engine (gfxengine) preference back to gl2. You first might want to check out the afore mentioned glcore Examples patch to see what you're forgoing.


A new entry to our Jitter Tools suite is the jit.gl.textmult object, which allows for manipulating letters and words of text using a jit.gl.multiple like interface and highly efficient mesh rendering. As an added bonus for text lovers we’ve removed the 1024 character limit on jit.gl.text input strings.

Also included with 8.5 are some lovely new jit.gl.pass post processing effects. The atmospheric effect adds global fog and atmospheric scattering to any 3D scene with ease, and for experimenting with global illumination check out the temporal screen-space ambient occlusion (tssao-gi) and screen-space reflections (tssao-gi-ssr and ssr) effects.

Speaking of global illumination, the new jit.gl.environment object handles the loading and sharing of environment map resources for image based lighting (IBL), cubemap, and skybox rendering for supported objects. This currently includes jit.gl.pbr, jit.gl.material, and jit.gl.skybox. The object functions like jit.gl.light, where if a context has an environment attached, the supported objects will use it for rendering.

We've also added glTF PBR material support to jit.gl.model, giving much better results when rendering these model files. In the video below we see non-PBR rendering on the left, and PBR rendering on the right.

Hey everyone, we've got an update for glcore included in the Jitter Tools 1.0.6 version now live in the Package Manager. This update addresses a handful of reports we've received since the release of 8.5 and is recommended for all 8.5.x glcore users.

Rob, congrats to you and c74 on glcore. I get the effort your team put into it. :-)
Are there C/++ examples for the updated interfacing possible HOST to/from GPU for textures, buffers, mapping between max,opencl,opengl, etc.

Unfortunately I don't have a great answer for you. The SDK has not been updated with examples for developing for glcore, and given the current state of flux in our backend graphics engine work, I don't have a good estimate for when that might change. 

That being said, both Syphon and Spout are open source and demonstrate how an external can support both legacy gl2 and modern glcore using some wrapper functions we expose in the jit.gl.draw.h header file. If you're only concerned with core profile support you can ignore these wrappers and link to the gl3 library headers instead (which may be easiest by defining GL3_VERSION=1 in your project preprocessor definitions). Additionally, the basic principles of jit.gl external development outlined in our SDK documentation still hold true.

I'm also more than happy to provide whatever insight I can for any brave explorers in this space.

I have a few questions as I use it.

Will the pbr in jit.gl.model be reflected without jit.gl.pbr connected? (I loaded the glTF and it seems to reflect the pbr textures without specifically connecting jit.gl.pbr or jit.gl.material). and, I could not change pbr parameter on jit.gl.model.

Also, if the texture loaded in jit.gl.model references a multi-texture by albedo, can I use the multi-texture in jit.gl.pbr when drawing with matrixoutput or jit.gl.mesh?

Jitter's material has many inheritance relations and parameters, and jit.gl.model is very difficult due to some invisible parts, so it would be great to have contents like 1st step.

Two things to say: First, I was wrong when I said earlier that the helpfile for jit.gl.textmult was not working.

I'm trying to create a simple sine wave animation with a head and a tail for an online course I am taking.

I remember using Bryce3D and VistaPro on the Amiga. Today I would adapt code from Shadertoy and use it in Max.

This works. I use it exclusively! And Blackhole for audio.
