Hello Max/MSP community. I'm about to deepen my knowledge of Max/MSP (using Max for Live). I understand the overall structure and big parts of the Live API, however I'm still at the beginning of my journey. 

Quite often, I open max for live devices from other persons to see how a certain problem / task is solved. Lately I stumbled over of "locked" devices. Some example of this locking: (1) I can't enter the edit mode. (2) Sometimes the Max window collapse after trying to open the device. (3) the objects in a patch are arranged in one place, making it hard to see how things are connected.

I found this in free as well as in commercial products. Is there a way to overcome this?

I searched deeply on the forum but no post helped me solve this little riddle.

I am trying to open a device on a separate floating window which should stay on top even if I click somewhere else.

I can manage to keep a floating window but it goes behind Live's interface whenever I click on it.

I tried giving the argument "Topmost 1" to the thispatcher object but this does not work.

This is what I am sending to "thispatcher" now: 

window flags nomenu, window flags float, window size 0. 0. 629.382764 169.519548, window exec, front, presentation 1 

I tried switching "front" with "Topmost 1", I tried removing "window flags float" and tried the other too but no success...

I am trying to iterate through all the clips in my live_set / song to gather midi data out of those clips. This is the current solution i managed to come with, but it feels highly unoptimised.

What would be the best way of accessing all the clips in my current live_set / Song ?

I'm trying to create a subpatch which has an input bang and then which (after other things) display a random number. The "simple" random thing is not enough so thats why the subpatch just for clarification, but thats not really the topic.

How can I use arguments/attributes/etc to set a number from outside of the subpatch?

The problem is, that I can set this number as an inlet, but I get too many inlets in my main patch... Ideally it would be an attribute parameter in the inspector or something like that, but so far I was not lucky.

Tried using $1 or #1 kind of things but I don't get how they're supposed to work.

I've just started learning MAX for Live and I'm following tutorials from someone on MAX MSP. I'm still not sure 100% how to translate patches into Max For Live from MAX MSP, and this is an example of such a problem. In the tutorial, the person makes this simple patch (on the left - noteout), and drags her mouse across the keyslider resulting in generic grand piano sounds. This didn't work for me in Max For Live using noteout, so I looked around and tried experimenting with midiout (the stuff on the right). However, I was unable to get any sound. I tried connecting to plugout which I understand is the only way to get audio out of Max for Live, but I don't know how one goes from makenote to plugout (I got an error-plugout doesn't recognize int). Also, I tried doing this both on a Max Instrument and Max Audio Effect template but still to no avail.

I'm surprised that I haven't been able to find a Serum-like  'FM-from-B'   m4l device out there, in which the frequency of an audio signal can be mapped to parameters in Live similarly to the Envelope Follower device.  I've fooled around with retune~ and it is providing me with reasonable frequency data, ...

BUT: I can't figure out how to convert that data into useable input for the  Abl. MultiMap  patcher.    The output of the mapping seems binary even after I used the scale object (input 0-20,000; output 0-1.) and regardless of the min / max settings in the device's UI.

I'm trying to build custom UIs for some of my VSTs in Ableton, but I want to retain the possibility to use the full plugin UI via some M4L buttons. I tried using the vst~ object to load them into Max/MSP, then added two buttons in presentation that trigger the open and wclose messages to display the UI. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work once I've closed the Max editor, the UI opens for a brief moment then seems to get killed by Ableton. If Max is open and I click the button from Max then everything works as expected. Does Ableton prevent Max from opening new Windows by default ? Is there a workaround ?
