Sometimes students do dumb things like patch a cycle~ with zero frequency into dac~, without an envelope, so that merely opening the patch passes high-amplitude DC offset to the speakers.

This means that opening a series of student files is risky. (However, I'm not smelling smoke, so perhaps the amplifier is filtering out DC, but I don't have firm documentation of that.)

Is there a way to configure MSP with a permanent DC blocker?

I tried inter-app routing audio MSP --> SuperCollider to get LeakDC into the chain, but the problem there is that Max resets the audio driver when opening a patch, and this destroys any routing that I had set up. (However, I could use this setup temporarily to confirm that MSP is not killing DC by default.)

The only solution I see at present is to remember rigorously to disable audio between patches, and make very sure that I zero the volume before enabling DSP. As this is a manual process, the likelihood of error is very high.

Workaround: Make an abstraction "out-dc~.maxpat" with inlet -> svf~ -> dac~ (using highpass output). Then (unix commandline)

So that (in theory) all the patches should then open using my abstraction instead of the normal dac objects.

This seems a rather humorous way to go about it but at least I will be less frightened of opening the patches.

(Which, btw, doesn't work for ezdac~ -- it's OK for a "newobj" to change text from dac~ to out-dc~ but there's no maxclass out-dc~... but a broken dac still blocks bad output, so, OK.)

why shell command? you could remove dac~ and ezdac~ and rename your abstraction to dac~ and ezdac~.

Hm, even if it were possible to remove them, the abstraction would have to be defined in terms of dac~. So, if the name dac~ could refer to an abstraction, and that abstraction references dac~, the likely possible outcomes would be either: Max refuses to load an infinitely recursive patch, or it tries and eats all the memory.

The point really is that it would be a nice feature to have. In SuperCollider, I can add a function to ServerTree to put a DC blocker at the tail of the node tree. Pd, AFAIK, doesn't have a good way (but there's an abstraction [pddp/ezoutput~] that covers it). In Max, note for future, train students not to use dac~ etc directly.

rather you had to rename the real dac~ to something else and keep it installed, then you can include it in your new dac~ abstraction.

the issue is indeed caused by "too much flexibility". if the patch has audio on by default and your runtime also already has audio on, there is nothing you can do to stop audio in that new patch, except making sure to turn audio off before manually.

the question then is who do you trust more: yourself or your students.

seriously, i would just replace dac~ with mydac~ using bbedit for incoming patches.

 you could create a basic 'snippet' and ask students to download it and use it(it could be as simple as a limi~ object right before the ezdac~ with @dcblock set to '1'... and whatever threshold plus other settings you think would be safest). this would be the patch they'd "(in theory)" (hopefully even somewhat religiously) use before sending anything else out to the dac. this would also be a good habit to get them into as it'd protect all their other setups outside of school the best(even from wayward patches posted by random strangers on places like slack, discord, reddit, etc...), while there's no magical solution that will protect that specific system at the school from every possible context, educating/training students into these good habits(as they exist all within max) could protect every system running max they may ever run into.

Good suggestion about sending a snippet to the students... although it's too late to implement for this term.

I don't think Max should block DC by default (for instance, if someone is sending control voltages out from a DC-coupled sound card to modular gear, then you don't want sub-sub-sub-audio frequencies to be cut). So this is really "precautions you didn't think about until it's too late." FWIW neither SuperCollider nor Pd recommend safety-first practices in the documentation either.

MSP Possible to enable a permanent DC blocker?

Hopefully this isn't a stupid question, but here goes. Is the velocity control input on makenote and noteout very subtle? There's not a massive amount of change through the range? If I send it 0 nothing is triggered so I'm sure it's working, but in terms of 1-127 it's a very slight change, right? I know you can set kslider to give out velocity, but what if you just wanted to send one number/pitch as a message and control its velocity without using kslider, is there a good way of doing this? I hope I'm not overlooking something simple. Different results are achieved on different pieces of equipment, right?

I'm looking to use NRPN MIDI messages to benefit of the 14bit resolution in order to convert it in CV voltage for my eurorack and having the finest voltage control under my fingers :)

I want to use a Behringer BCF2000 as an NRPN controler and creating a max MSP patch to translate fader motion in CV voltage by the ES3 Expert Sleepers module.

I'm at the beginning and i have a question about the NRPNIN object.

When i observe the parameter value (the leftmost out NRPNIN) going out with Max console i'm not seing what i'm expecting...

For exemple if i'm programming a NRPN with a 255 steps depth (this is the minimum while the maximum would be 16383 steps)
i can observe when i move the controler fader a step interval of 2 (0 2 4 6 8 ..... 254 255).
So the "bit depth" is not 255 but 255/2=127... ?

And more i increase the NRPN steps depth more the  interval value increase when i'm observing the incomming NRPNIN values.

Where i'm wrong ? how to benefit of the NRPN hi resolution values in MSP signal processing ?

Before using the BCF2000 controller I started by testing with my ROLAND A-500 pro which can be programmed to send NRPN messages.
But whatever the value of bit def programmed the faders keep a definition in 127 steps.

the lesson to be learned is to check that the controller is capable of having a movement precision that corresponds to the desired NRPN def bit...

Since my question about AudioMix died on the vine, let me ask a broader question -- what is the best way to handle mixing in Max?

Design ideals would be: A/ maximal reuse (minimal rebuilding of the same structures again and again), B/ easy persistence of mix settings (ideally, effortless for the end-user), C/ easy-to-use GUI.

AudioMix nails A and C but B seems slightly delicate (and not a lot of information about how to improve that).

I could live without the GUI but persistence is kind of a big deal (reopen patch --> mix is destroyed, that's not usable).

Since my question about AudioMix died on the vine, let me ask a broader question -- what is the best way to handle mixing in Max?

i have a modular mixer bpatcher collection, too, but i dont really use it, it is often faster to use vanilla objects.

i mean... gain staging is [*~], an effect-send consists of one connection, and an effect-return of another one. 
summing is done by connecting two connections into the same place. 
if you like to use insert effects, make yourself a little abstraction from 2 gate objects and you are done, M/S is + and - and a shelving filter is in the biquad helpfile.

there is mot much you could actually build or program when it comes to mixing, unless you have to do something strange like using 10 DSP powered VST plug-ins as 10-channel plug-in in a custom surround mixer with wacom control.

I guess I look at it like this: If it takes three minutes to rebuild stereo level scaling and panning, that's three minutes that I'm not spending on production.

When I picked up SuperCollider, I knew I was not going to want to address mixing in terms of buses and groups. So I wrote a MixerChannel class, which time investment has more than paid off by now.

Working on course demos in Pd or Max, I often don't even bother with panning because it's just that little bit more work than it's worth. When you start compromising results for that reason, it indicates a usability problem.

AFAICS the smallest number of objects you need to build a quick fader from scratch is mc.pack~, mc.stereo~ (because mc.stereo~ at least gives you linear panning in one object -- not sure if you can get equal power here, though, otherwise you need to clip the pan signal, invert it for one channel, and apply the sinusoidal or square root function separately, with two *~'s... the time adds up), and mc.*~, provided that you remember to use mc.dac~ instead of dac~. Indeed, the mc way is not *bad* exactly... but I don't like to spend time rebuilding fundamental architecture. I also didn't quite care to reinvent the wheel in Max, so I wondered if anyone had a ready-made solution.

I don’t think you will find a Max solution you are happy with. Properly named variables for storing mixer settings and probably automation, trim function, panning and pan-law, mute, solo, solo in place, PFL, grouping, metering etc, whatever you want in your mixer. Another developer will most likely have other priorities, at least I never heard about a complete mixing solution in Max. Max is not famous for mixing, most people mix in another DAW or on hardware. Obviously you know how to program all this mixing stuff, so it might be better to make the modules yourself.

it totally make sense what you said, and i can follow you. but if a process only consist of two objects and you wrap it into a dozen mini abstractions you will still have to make 2 connections to get it involved in your DSP.

it is hard to recommend a best practice, because you have to decide yourself what you need more often and what you need less often.

for example you could build a mixer abstraction (without GUI) for 16 stereo channels and with all the features you need and reuse that for the next 100 years, no problem. you can design it so that it´ll work with button, toggle and multislider right out of the box.

[110.gain~] is a *~ and [110.gain-ip~] is a *~ with a line~ for the control input. then there is [110.manygain~] which does the same for 16 channels at once and [110.multigain~] with 16 indivual controls for each of the 16 channels. 
the latter is already a little mixer.
now  you can use prepend or mc to output the 16 audio channels in a single connection in order to send them to [110.multipan~] to control the panning with signals. or to [110.multipanning~] to control the pananing with data rate, or to [110.multipanner~] to use a lookuptable for the panning function. if it already stereo channels, you would already have an abstraction called multibalance...

so far so good.

but sooner or later you might feel the need for a 32 channel version. or for total recall. or for a mono version. then you have to continously update and expand your abstractions collection and eventually end up with more abstraction than different projects.

a simple bpatcher for a "channelstrip as in a DAW" already requires scripting for changing the number of I/Os (mono/stereo/surround) and poly~ or mc~ for the different versions. then they need a s/r system to make things like "effect return" and "mute/solo" available, and at this point you have not saved a preset of this thing or involved plug-ins.

i would not advised against it. 

but always consider to build the whole mixer in a single patcher as a possible alternative which causes less work.


In SuperCollider, I handled that by having MixerChannel and MixerChannelDef -- where the latter defines number of channels in and out, parameters with expected ranges, and the signal processing to apply. So, I didn't define e.g. ambisonic mixers because the user can do that, any time ("requires scripting for changing the number of I/Os" is a non-issue over there).

Graphical patching AFAICS struggles with dynamic creation of information-flow paths; it's much simpler in a text language. So "you might feel the need for a 32 channel version" is not a problem in that context. If I need five mixers, I create five. If I need 200, I create 200.

In Pd, I used [throw~] / [catch~] and [send~] / [receive~] for cable-free connections between mixers, sends etc. Tidier (though with some risk of block delays, perhaps not OK for every use case).

Anyway... I'm opinionated, I guess, and anyone is free to ignore me. I was wondering what people had come up with... seems that the general answer is a bespoke solution for every project.

Audio mixing recommendations?

I'm trying to make sort of a "swarming" bed of MC oscillators, and I want to set up some adjustable cycling envelopes. Normally I'd use line~ or something, but I want to set something up so that the 5 MC oscillator channels each have a similar "base" looping envelope, where the attack/decay all deviate randomly from each other. Does this make sense? MC still messes my brain up when it gets deeper into manipulating the individual channels - any help would be greatly appreciated!!

this is probably more intricate than you need, but wanted to suggest you look at 'mc.snowphasor~' it seems designed to allow for envelopes and other guided-trajectories to relate to each other similarly(but it's probably not going to give you your exact idea of having everything stem from one/similar 'base' loop-envelope)...

for your exact idea, i'd look into using gen~. click on the helpfile for a basic 'gen~' object, and look under the 'mc' tab, you'll see you can use ops like 'mc_channel' to cater an algorithm according to channel. 

otherwise, another option(outside of gen~) might be to use something like (mc.)zigzag~ and control it by signal to get sample-accuracy across the similarly designed channels(and use the 'mc.target' object to set them up with their individual envelopes).

its my first update since my purchase of full max licence so im not sure do I have to uninstall previous max version and then install the update OR do I just install the update into the same old folder and It automatically deletes the older version?

Hiya, Max updates are always a full install so there is no need to pre-install other versions. Your snippets and Preferences shouldn't be affected in any way.

I am aware that you don't need previous versions, but if you have them: do you need to first uninstall them yourself or does the new installation do that for you?

👆this(you'll be given a choice when running the installer to either 'replace' the old version of Max, or install alongside(allowing you to keep newer versions alongside older ones)... but either way, as long as you open and work within the 8.1.6 version of Max, you'll have access to the latest/8.1.6 version of the 'mtr' object - you don't need to uninstall anything first)

I try to adapt [mtr] for parameter recording for non real time rendering in Jitter.
This means recording with 60 frames per second and output of recorded parameters on bangs that are send from the rendering logic (meaning not equidistant intervals).
How to achieve that?

The "next" message unfortunately doesn't work, because it is event based instead of time step based and so will not work with parameters that are not updated every frame during recording.

([mtr] would help  to overcome limitations of the Non-real time 4K recording patch in  https://cycling74.com/tutorials/best-practices-in-jitter-part-2-recording-1 ).

Edit: I mean my attempt with "playatms" followed by "stop" feels clumsy.


Hello Andrew, [mtr] especially the pattr-style binding seems to be quite buggy in Max 8.1.8.
I tried to make a parameter recorder for non real time rendering (e.g. 60fps recording and slow and non equidistant playback based on the speed of the rendering), in order to overcome limitations of this one https://cycling74.com/tutorials/best-practices-in-jitter-part-2-recording-1/ .
I would like to know if one can use [pattrstorage @subscribemode 1], [autopattr] in parallel to [mtr @bindto].
In the following example it looks like after binding the sliders to [mtr] the subscription to the [pattrstorage] objects gets lost. Is this a general limitation ?

wow, new viddll and hap engine in the same day.  what's new with the hap engine?

I was actually experiencing choppiness during a videos first loop thorugh (although after a loop  everything seemed to be smoother) with viddll 1.0.9 (but not in 1.0.7) driving frames ([metro]> [counter]>[prepend frame]) with h264 video, but it's smooth again in 1.1.0. This is without messing with the cache_size or loadram settings.

Hap update is just for compatibility with 7.3.4, no new features.

You should have only 1 World Draw each of your effects to a node and erase the background. Put on a final videoplane.
