First off—huge thanks to Elphnt for the amazing Max for Live wrapper tutorial! It’s been incredibly helpful as I’ve been building custom wrappers for my VST3 plugins.

That said, I’ve hit a snag when trying to make these wrappers portable between my 

 machines. Specifically, I’m loading a plugin using [plug_vst3 <plugin-name>], and everything works perfectly on the system where I created the patch. But when I open the same Max for Live device on the other platform, the plugin doesn’t load.

I tried debugging by comparing my wrapper to Elphnt’s 

, which interestingly works cross-platform without any issues. I copied the initialization setup from that wrapper but it didn’t solve the problem in my case.

To further rule out plugin-specific issues, I tested with the 

(thats the same one he made the tutorial with), installed to standard paths on both Mac and Windows—and I still see the same issue.

It seems like the plugin reference or path embedded in [plug_vst3] doesn’t remain valid when switching operating systems, unless re-initialized manually by clicking on the object. I’m guessing the issue may be related to platform-specific file paths or internal plugin IDs that don’t map properly between systems.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Is there a best practice for making sure VST3 plug-ins inside Max wrappers remain valid and loadable across platforms?

I had this idea for a realtime granular device that would record using 

into a buffer that's, say, a 1/16th note long.  And then to have a granular gen patch which is listening to the same buffer and spitting out grains.  It works, in theory, but of course due to the buffer constantly being overwritten by new data, I'm getting some strange metallic glitchy distorted sounds occasionally.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the best way to accomplish this without these glitches.

Started imagining a ping-pong system where I have two buffers (A & B) and one of them is recording while the other is playing back, and then they swap their roles, but I can't seem to figure out an eloquent way to make this work.

Or perhaps, am I missing something and there is perhaps a way to do this without the double buffer system?  I spent some time tonight messing with the sync out from 

 thinking maybe I could detect the edge there and use that to smooth out the glitches.  I also can't be sure that the glitches are only occurring at the end or beginning of the buffer.

A stripped down version of this idea is attached in the form of a max4live patch.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated! You'll just need to turn up the Grain Size and send some audio out from Ableton to hear what I'm talking about.  It's exceptionally noticeable if you scrub around via the position slider.

First time posting and been exploring Max For Live for a few weeks now.

There's something I don't understand and haven't found an answer in any documentation. Maybe I just missed it or maybe it's just due to a behavior of Live itself.

I am trying to remote, let's say for example a fader in Live using another Fader.

So to do it I have made the following path:

It basically monitors and remotes both Faders. Independently, everything works well. If I move the Fader 1, it monitors perfectly. If I move the Fader 2, it monitors perfectly as well. I have also added dials in the path to make sure the remote component works well for both faders, and it does. But when I link the two, when moving Fader 1 it doesn't apply to Fader 2.

My only clue is that I have either missed something, or that there is somekind of touch behavior in Live that prevent this from working.

Just in case I wasn't super clear on what my issue is, I'm linking a quick video of the issue.

I have just found that Ableton beats counting is a bit weird.

I have a test project with 2 bars in 4/4, 2 bars in 6/8 and then again 4/4.

To debug what's going on the Ableton internal counter, at each tick I have logged bars/beats/sub_division/ticks, song time (expressed in beats, not in ms as reported by documentation) and time signature.

As you can notice, when time signature switch from 4/4 to 6/8 Ableton BEATS=5 (does not reset to BEATS=1), because Ableton computes bars/beats/sub_division/ticks reasoning as the current time signature is the same for the entire song. So when it switched to 6/8 Ableton does the computation as the whole song is in 6/8.

This is even more evident in the transition back from  6/8 to 4/4. You will notice that the BARS count decrease (from BARS=5 to BARS=4):

BARS=5 BEATS=4 SUB=2 TICKS=53 | TIME=13.966938775510204 | SIGNATURE=6/8

BARS=4 BEATS=3 SUB=1 TICKS=2 | TIME=14.006938775510203 | SIGNATURE=4/4

This is because when switching back to 4/4, Ableton consider the entire song in 4/4 and update the time values accordingly.

The issue is that I find impossible to detect the real (musical) downbeat when a time signature changes like this occur. For musical downbeat I mean the real first beat of a bar (the one we hear with a different sound when we activate the metronome). To do that we should know every possible signature change in the project, but we can't assume to start the project always from the beginning and detect all the signature changes along the way.

Has anyone managed to find a solution to this problem? I tried but failed miserably.

The only way I have found is to add a listener to a button on the controller to manually compute a beat offset when a beat misalignment occur due to time signature change and apply that offset to the beat reported by Ableton. Better than nothing 🤷‍♂️

In this configuration I'm having problems with the locked_bgcolor attribute when set to a Dynamic color name ("Device Background").

Trouble is, it's only happening in .amxd that I froze/exported a while back, and which have worked correctly for more than a year.  

I've tried to reproduce the issue from scratch by mixing and matching devices exported from Max as old as 8.3.3, but I can't seem to cause the problem.

Pictures of the issue below.  Is anyone else able to reproduce something like this?
