I did find an ancient package called Lobjects written by Peter Elsea in 2002 on maxobjects.com that does some conversions but much of the functionality in that (extensive) package is now incorporated into Max and the download site for the package and objects no longer exists. Pity because it does contain a number of other gems too!

He was obviously a very bright star in the earlier days of electronic music. His personal website contains a whole raft of useful tutorials on matters musica electronica!

It's perhaps of historical interest to note that in his technical reference to Lobjects, he's concerned about the then current limitations of only having computers with a maximum of 128Mb of RAM!!!

lobjects have been highlight of 3rd party externals for me over many years.
still, Romans suggestion to use sprintf is better in my eyes, one does not have to fiddle arround to remove "h" and there is no > 255 truncation limit,
compared to lhex.
for arbitrary list length, sprintf, iter and thresh would do the trick.

It's a bit of a shame that my attempts to hack in to my mixer's audio level service has come to dead end now, as even though I can extract the audio levels that I'm looking for in the UDP blobs it sends, there is currently no way that I can currently command the custom meter object in the software (Mixing Station) that I am using. 

Questions and advice about using the sprintf object go back a ways....

The sprintf object indexes every new message it receives, which results in ever-increasing memory usage as your patch runs. The somewhat recent advent of 64-bit memory addressing means that the memory usage is less of a problem. However, the above is still true.

For various reasons — efficiency is one of them — all symbols are cached in Max, and they are never freed unless you quit the Max application. Symbol-caching is a feature of Max that’s been around for a long time, and it’s been the recommendation of similar duration that we don’t suggest relying on patching/objects that generate tons of unique symbols. Even though 64-bit addressing does change things, I would still advise caution, depending on your sprintf usage.

(And it would be impolite to not pause at this point to thank our mutual friend E.J. for his clear explanation  of this to me a long time ago)

I assume that if I were converting 2-nibble hex bytes, using the [iter]-[sprintf]-[thresh] method that @SourceAudio recommended, that would only generate a maximum of 256 symbols though? If the same values were to be presented to sprintf more than once, I pressume that the existing symbols would get re-used or over-written? Or would the longer hex lists themselves also create unique symbols?

Yep. · If you convert an integer X to a symbol N times per second and the integer is X every time, Max will use that symbol from the symbol table (as um... a pointer to a string, I think).

that is one of the reasons why i only convert stuff bytewise. (the other reason is that i would not know how to do it for longer strings /greater values anyway. ) (and for midi, you dont really want to enter the whole string in decimal values anway, rather only controller or note  values.)

on my wonderful OS9 operating system RAM fragmentation is a real issue, far more than anywhere else. if you work with max, you should reboot twice a day, i.e. not only restart max from time to time.


but i also think that for 256 values you are on the safe side - and i would not be so sure if third party objects of the same functionality such as sprintf or buffer~ not maybe do exactly the same.

this test has now been running for a good while....


As you can see limit seems to be thresh with max 4095 items.

The Mixer sends the level signals out in an arbitrarily long blob on the end of a UDP/OSC style message. The header has non-standard OSC style addresses followed by a variable number of integer parameters including a blob length value. The blob tagged on the end is generally made up of 32 bit float  values for each level but without being able to decode the header first, you can not predict where the blob starts! There can also be anything from 4 to 96 such values in the blob depending on the message type, of which I'm only interested in two, that occur at varying positions depending on the message type! It's a nightmare to try to understand without breaking it all down into hex nibbles (x00 - xFF) that I can compare with the examples in the document I have. On top of that, the level decoding is not as simple as it sounds as it's neither a linear nor logarithmic scale - instead, the scale is formed from four linear bands that collectively appoximate to the desired logarithmic dB scale. It's more like a university level project than a hobby!

most things in midi fit into a single byte because they are 7 or 8 bits. 
and in most documentations everything is written with space between the bytes even if represents something "longer".

so i believe it is fine to start processing and displaying everything as single bytes - and when wrong decimal represenations of a 14 bit value appear you will notice and can still change the patch.

the original [Lhex] from 1997 is also not able to process more than 0-255 and will truncate 257 decimal to 01 hex.

to my understanding, when you limit yourself to single bytes, you will only create up to 256 strings in RAM - but for each instance. (which somehow recommends to use a coll with pregenerated values instead if you plan to have hundreds of copies?)

Boy, it's been a long time since I checked in here. Lobjects now have an attribute--  maxlistsize-- set its as large as you like.

Lhex only produces values up to FF because that was all that was needed at the time. It produces symbols that are understood by some other objects. (Sysex messages. mostly.) Number will display hex of any size.

I'm working on a patch that lets the user automate the spatialization of some sources in spat; everything works fine and I have a subpatch that controls the xyz of every source correctly (function goes to curve~ which sends the list of xyz to spat.oper); the problem is that whenever you pause the playback of the track and select a specific portion of it, the curve~ stops being coordinated with the playback. I already did some pause/resume functions but what I want is that whenever I select i.e. the millisecond 22.000 as selection point on the waveform~ object, the curve~ resume its playing from there. Is it possible?

I've already tried messages like "resume $1" and "start $1" but didn't work.

This is probably a dumb question but is there a way to get Max to issue a sound via the OS?

I have an idea to create an alarm to go with the clock display that I have running on my MIDI controller. I'm sure that there are plenty of ways in which I could get Max to play an alert sound via my audio interface but to keep things simple I was wondering if there was a simple way to get Max to output an alert sound via the OS?

So, I've got my alarm clock working and at present it's generating an alarm sound by playing the telephone sound on the GS Wavetable Synth as well as flashing a lamp on my X-Touch MIDI controller. However, hearing the sound is dependent on the sound from my PC audio going through the amp I'm controlling with the patch and the MIDI controller but I won't hear anything if the amp is muted. I really would like to find a way to beep the built in speaker at OS level as a backup.

I can build a standalone of XronoMorph – https://www.dynamictonality.com/xronomorph.htm – and it works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. However, when I codesign the app and attempt to save a preset, the preset json file (in XronoMorph.app/Contents/Resources does not get written to). Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause or any possible solutions?

I may be wrong, but I think I have given the app disk access rights. But moving the app to Downloads, Desktop, Documents, or Applications makes no difference – changes won't write to the presets json in the Resources folder. So I am a bit confused as to why this is happening.

It is not moving the app, but write destination for json file.
By the way, are you using absolute path ?
not just write presets.json, but
write /Appications/MyApp.app/Conents/Resources/presets.json


The preset json is first read in and then the writeagain message is used to save any changes. The read message specifies only the name of the preset file with no path at all. This seems to work fine for the standalone, but writing breaks when the app is codesigned. Tomorrow, I will try specifying a relative path (I prefer relative to absolute so the user can put the app wherever they like) and see if that makes any difference although it's not clear to me why it would.

Using absolute paths solved the problem – presets are now saving in the codesigned version of the standalone. Thank you for your advice! One thing to note is that sending "path" to [thispatcher] does not seem to work for standalones. But the path can be obtained by sending a sendapppath message to Max, as in this adapted version:

It's a slightly annoying design because it does not work for the patch running in Max. I wonder if there is any way to get a single solution for patches, standalones, and codesigned standalones?

I am on macOS Ventura 13.3.1 with Max 8.5.4. Sending "path"  to [thispatcher] works as expected in a patch but, in a standalone (whether or not codesigned), the output is only a forward slash: /

Odd, but it seems that adding [deferlow] to delay the [loadbang] sending "path" to [this patcher] gets this method to work for a not-codesigned standalone (I have not yet tested a codesigned version). Patch attached.

Hi, I am implementing a patch to calculate the loudness of an incoming signal for an interactive live performance system. This system will have a parameter to change the duration of the sliding window between 1 and 30 seconds. My first approach was to use average~ however this doesn't work when suddenly changing the time interval from 1s to 10s for instance as I guess the buffer doesn't have access to the samples of the last 10s. For this reason, I've thought of implementing the average calculation by always storing in a delay buffer the last 30 seconds and from there get the last T time samples to calculate the accumulation (integral) and then divide that between T-time samples to get the average.
My question is how to get the last X samples from a delay~ buffer?

As alternative,  you could store average per period, like 10 - 100 ms instead of each sample which would make storage and calculations much more effective

That's a good shout. However, how could I constantly update the buffer with the new incoming samples?

here is what I woud do :
get average level of 1 second which is your minimum report length
by taking 100 readings and averaging them.
meter~ set to report 10ms interval -> zl.group 100 = 1000 ms

30 average values get inserted into coll , you set how many
last seconds get taken into calculation of average level.

if you need to access samples other than the last one, why not use a tapping buffer instead of delay~ ?

i build loudness metering also around average~ because it is actually cheaper than using individual math objects. 
no idea why you would like to modulate the window size though. for loudness the mean-sqare is normally measured in chunks of 400 ms with 75% overlap. which is roughly what you get when using average~ with 400, followed by rampsmooth~ with 400, and then snapshot~ the values to be displayed (or accumulated).

alternatively to the rampsmooth+ you could take the analysed 100ms values and interpolate those values over 5 values. (2 in both directions. nowadays done using zl.stream, exactly.)

My client wants to be able to adjust the sliding window. I went for taking the avg~ in chunks of 100ms and making a 300-long list (30 seconds) with zl.stream so I could always have access to the last N average samples if the sliding window was increased.

These are very good ways to find the closest number to certain number.

However, when the input number (the one you want to go to its closest number) its exactly in the middle, just between two other numbers (for example, 7 is just between 5 and 9) it will always go to the lowest closest number.
Any ideas of how to make it choose the upper one??? For example, 7 going to 9 instead of 5. Or way better... Any ideas of how to make it show the two options?

The toggle option to show the two closest numbers (the upper and the lower ones) will only work when the input number is just in the middle of two numbers (e.g. 7 is just between 5 and 9), but that was the goal actually, so its perfect.

not too convincing, because it breaks the size limit of expr.

I'm working on a turning a Max project of mine into a standalone, and I just cannot figure out how to stop the Max console from popping up.

Does anyone know how to remove it from a standalone, or even just prevent it from popping up when the user starts the app? Thanks!

only reliable way to get rid of max console is to edit 
maxinterface.json  file.


Add a [standalone] object into you top-level patcher - it requires no connections. Select it and open the Inspector. Near the bottom of the options, you'll see one called "Status Window Visible at Startup" - uncheck that and the Console Window will stop appearing.

Unchecking "Status Window Visible at Startup" doesn't work... The Status Window always opens.

can you post which os and max version you use ?
I remove all parts of maxinterfaces.json file that I don't need,
in older max versions i simply delete it in standalones,
but max 8 > uses color definitions for few objects,
like umenu etc, so one has to keep color definitions inside. 




I delete maxinterfaces.json file in standalone... but the Status Window still opens.


However, everything works fine on Windows.

but max 8.5.3 has no chance to open max console,
if json file is removed


However, I did kill the json file and, despite that, the max console window still opens. 
I don't know what else to do...

note : The max console window does not open if I launch the "/myapp/Contents/MacOS/myapp" file with the terminal.

Hiding Console in Max Standalone

I am trying to write a standalone app called Nudger for somebody in a different country whose setup I have no details for and who does not have Max or enough tech knowledge to play with it. It's a very simple tool that converts control message coming from one port into note messages sent to another port and all unmodified message to a third port that can then be used in Cubase to control various jog wheel functions from an X-Touch controller. All that works fine.

In order to ensure that the MIDI configuration matches his system, I have provided picker lists to ensure that the MIDI messages are being read from and then sent to the correct ports. Again, all that works fine.

However, in order to save him having to re-enter the configuration every time he uses the app, I am trying to store the three port configurations using a coll with a read process to load the coll data when the app starts and to write the coll everytime the port selctions are changed. Again, that works in the patcher but not in the standalone!

1) I assumed that the executable (the Nudger.exe file) would operate entirely on its own but I am now concluding that I need to include the collective (the Nudger.mxf) and its resource folder when I send it to him. Is that correct or not?

2) No matter what I try, the executable is reading the configuration file (Ports.txt) into the coll from the resource/support folder but when I write the data back, it always goes to another copy of the Ports.txt folder in the same directory as the executable. How can I resolve this such that the executable uses the same file for both reading and writing?

3) Is it not possible to embed the coll and its data in the patch so that it doesn't need to be read from a file at all? Again, this works in the patcher but not in the standalone.

In the attached patch, I have put a red box to indicate the bit of code that has the problem.

Urgent assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!

Assuming that you want it to read/write next to patch or exe file.

Give me a minute, I'll post a patch demonstrating that,
there were many posts here dealing with same thing.

Standalone that you send must be complete.
Means folder with exe file +  mxf + all resources .
in some cases one has to copy vb runtime dlls into it.


If midi configuration always remains unchanged,
you can simply loadbang port messages to midi objects,
needs no coll at all.
By the way, embedded coll is stored into mxf same as in the patch, but unchangeable, once compiled into mxf.

As it takes some time to load all ports, depending what else is running on app start, I would add some delay before reading Ports.txt file.

Yes, I realise now that the standalone .exe file is simply the Max Runtime module and that the actual code comes from the .mxf file and the resouce folder. Not ideal when you want to send just one file to do all the work but, hey ho! I'm wondering if there is tool that creates a truely standalone, compiled and linked executable from Max code in a single file, like I was used to in my Fortran/Pascal days?
I get what you are saying about embedded colls - it was what I suspected, thus having to read and write the config to something external.
I have no idea what MIDI ports he has in his sytem and I can't assume they won't change. Hence why I went for the picker lists and an initialisation sequence that ensures all the Max midi ports are disabled before I start (bottom left in my patch).
I have put some delays in at the initialisation stage to try to see if that fixed the problem but it didn't make any difference.
The whole thing only runs through a single presentation window that shows the port configuration menus. The code that actually does the task of converting and separating the MIDI messages is tiny (bottom right of my patch).
Anyway, I will have a look at your suggestion and see if I can get that to work now.

@SourceAudio - thanks again. I can see what your patch is doing - except, what is the symout argument in the sprintf command - I've not come across that one before?

yes it is possible to make a single exe file, but not from max itself.

I use enigmavb exe packer, which is freeware, to do so.
I am not at home, have only mac with me, so can't upload any windows resources.
It is a very simple procedure, most work actually is to trim standalone down to include all needed files, but nothing else, to reduce the size.

When I come back home in few days, I'll be able to upload or send any infos needed.

About disabling midi ports till correct ones are selected ... ?
Correct ports are the ones your user has to select in popup menu,
and then store them into coll.
On loadbang, it is enough to keep gates to all midi ports closed, till
coll dump with all stored ports finds corresponding symbol(s) in the menu,
which then opens the gate upon setting the port.
Manual selection in menu also opens the gate,
route menu symbol output to t 1 s   trigger 1 (for gate) symbol for port

I'll have a look at enigmavb - it looks interesting.
The problem with Windows is that not all MIDI drivers are multi-client - in fact very few are in my experience. It means that if Max is sitting on them then other apps can't connect to them. It's a real pain sometimes. As I'm not able to see what happens at his end, I'm having to cover all bases and make sure that Max doesn't inadvertantly stamp on his system, hence the decision to ensure that Max diables its own access to all the MIDI ports and then only activate the ones he chooses to use. In fact, thinking about it, I ought to disable any previously selected port when the picker list changes!

Windows limitations with midi and audio drivers use between applications  is really a  big problem.
I am not sure if disabling midi ports in Max does free them for other applications, never tested that being Mac user ...

Disabling all but selected midi out ports might get tricky
because you use 2 output menu objects.
One could loadbang - disable all, then read coll for saved ports,
enable them if matching ports are found in the menus.
Manual selection for input - no problem


But you can't do it same way for 2 output ports.
I would suggest to select all midi ports and execute all using button
which would set ports and store Ports.txt file.



It's Ok, I have that covered. On startup, a loadbang disables all the ports in Max and then when the config is read into the coll it enables those ports it finds. As the config file only ever contains the names of ports that are listed in Max at the time they are chosen, it is unlikely to fail. In the event that a port is removed or the name changed externally, Max will simply select the first port in the list by default. I suppose I could be clever and compare the name in the config file and the name in picker and if they don't match, colour the picker red to indicate that it needs a new selection.

Hi ! I read in this topic that it is possible to make a single exe file with enigmavb (@source audio). I try to use the sofware but when I launch the packed exe., only the max runtime open as if it didn't have embedded the mxf file. would you be able to explain to me how proceed with enigmavb ?

URGENT HELP NEEDED! Stadalone search paths

Hi!
I know this is the kind of topic that a lot of posts in this forum answers, but I can't get the exact information i'm looking for.

I have three colls (could be more) in which I have symbols. 
Ex : 
Coll 1 : 
1, apple;
2, orange;
3, mango;
4, mulberry;

Coll 2 :
1, watermelon;
2, orange;
3, avocado;
4, apple;

Coll 3 :
1, orange;
2, strawberry;
3, papaya;
4, apple;

As you can see, "apple" and "orange" are in each of the colls.
I'd like to populate a new coll with only these two symbols.

I know there are some posts about removing the duplicates, but not so much about keeping the duplicates, and it's often about numbers, maybe I could do something with converting the symbols to ascii and itoa back when the duplicates are filtered but i can't seem to find the exact way of doing this...

the zl/list object has modes for getting things in common between two lists.  It works with symbols or numbers.

@Double_UG your approach seem to kind of do it! Thanks! The thing is that it puts every matching symbol on one coll line... But thank you for showing me the zl.sect! 

Here is the example in context using filenames. The filenames that are identical are in bold (the colls will contain a lot of entries) :
Coll 1 :
1, AC_SLATER_bass_loop_pitchy_af_01_128_E.wav;
2, AC_SLATER_drum_fill_akai_127.wav;
3, DD_RAA_77_drums_loops_soul_hat_groove_heavy.wav;

then you shoul have stated so, instead of duplicates.
If you now say only names that are contained in all 3 colls,
then use zl.sice 2 at output.
In theory, a singe coll could also have repeated names inside,
like :
1, AC_SLATER_bass_loop_pitchy_af_01_128_E.wav;
2, AC_SLATER_bass_loop_pitchy_af_01_128_E.wav;
17, AC_SLATER_bass_loop_pitchy_af_01_128_E.wav;
