Max on Linux in Bottles

A new post specifically about Max on Linux in Bottles, in which I’ll be updating you on my ongoing adventures with it.

Debian -> KDE -> Bottles -> Max 8.6.5 & Max 9.1.3 ;-)

Thanks to Bottles everything works with a better graphical interface, featuring excellent boot, backup and export options, and it’s much faster than Lutris!

All working except:

• The [umenu] object isn’t working at the moment. When you click on a menu object in preview mode to select a different option, nothing happens.

• The [jit .grab] camera object can only be opened once per session; if you close it and then open it again, the camera freezes.

Maybe somebody can help with the ‘umenu’ object not working?

Steps to follow:

1. Install (Flatpak!) and open Bottles (with an active internet connection!)

   • + (create new Bottle)

   • name (use a simple name)

   • Gaming

   • Runner: ge-proton11-1

   • Bottle Directory: Default (I tried it in a different directory on a second hard drive to keep all the Bottles files separated from the system, and, strangely eno ugh, only Max stopped working; all the other software in Bottles continued to work.)

2. Open the newly created Max Bottle

   • Settings

   • Advanced Display Settings

   • Screen Scaling: 160 (a number that works for your screen)

3. Return to the Max Bottle main screen

   • Install programmes... (DO NOT run the Max msi executable file YET!)

   • Install FL Studio (or another programme, but not tested; this will automatically configure all the necessary settings for Max for you!)

   • Close Bottles after installation and reopen it

   • Launch FL Studio

4. If that works (everything is set up automatically! ;-)

   • close everything

   • open Bottles -> open the newly created Max Bottle (with FL Studio)

   • Dependencies -> vcredist2022: Install

   • Back to main screen -> Settings -> Synchronisation: Esync

   • Back to main screen -> Run executable file... -> Max 8.6.5 or Max 9.1.3

   • Install Max 8 -> close Bottles and reopen it -> start Max 8.6.5 or Max 9.1.3

   • Activate your licence -> enjoy!

Return to the main screen of your Max Bottle -> remove FL Studio (or other chosen programme, remove it if you don’t need it, as it takes up a lot of space and the installed dependencies and settings will remain in that Bottle!)

It seams a long process but was completed in about 40 minutes.
