Sequencing

Hi max community! This is my first post...

I've been learning max for around a year now and am particularly interested in its sequencing potential. Particularly its potential beyond standard sequencing like that available on simple drum sequencers etc.

My main inspiration, as i expect is similar for a lot of you here, is autechre's use of sequencers made in max. I expect that they have used/built upon structures used in hardware sequencers they have used. However, I do not have any of my own, so feel lacking in insight.

I've been creating drum sequencing patches using the live.grid object (which i have found useful for step length manipulation for polymetric drum beats) and the itable object (which i have used for creating probability based drum beats), as well as using some conditional objects for connecting things together.

So my question is, are there any other methods for sequencing which you guys use? Which other methods do you use, and why are they useful/preferred?

You are also welcome to simply start some discussion on sequencing in max, all will be welcome by me.

Thanks, Seb

Hi Seb, you might enjoy the Greg Taylor book on sequencing with Max, it's really good. "Step By Step".

+1 for 'Step By Step'
(i used these jitter-based techniques if it's ok to share here, too:
•˚::*:˚_Journey Of The Sparklies_˚:*::˚•
•|o_0||∆|||CellBlock Caravan|||∆||O_o|•
__Clus†erƒunk__
and other than that, i'd recommend looking up 'Markov Chain' and 'Euclidean'(+ 'sequence' ...here and on Google) for more algorithmic-based ideas)

for a sequencer patch you need 4 people: one guy who regulary clicks the bang button, one guy who counts thase bangs and one guy who routes the numbers to different instruments.

i am guy number 4, i am the boss. i tell the other 3 what to do.

☝️ guy number 4 also the most expensive one. sometime you might want to pay his salary in ms other times you might get away with paying in notevalues, or other currency. check your bank exchange rate before hiring him.

Sequencing with max is one of the most interesting things cus it is not a regular time based grid.
The funny comment Roman Thilenius said is the way you don't want to go but in AE's case they having a tool for controling these steps and loading in all the moduls they want to be part of their tracks.
This is a long way of routing but in the long term much more effective than be stuck with a small 16 step sequencer.
