I've got a standalone app I've built in 8.2.0 and running on a Mac Mini M1 processor. When i run the standalone on the mac mini, I get the security "app would like to use the microphone" prompt on every start of the application, despite my having granted it, and every change i make to the audio status also brings up this prompt. if i quit out of the standalone, and check security preferences, i can see my standalone has been granted access to the microphone, but it still prompts me every start and every driver change i make.

hey Ben. yes--can confirm the security stuff is not an issue on my Mojave machine.

Hi, I think Big Sur tightens up security a bit more than Catalina and insists on a code-signed and properly entitled application for some types of persistent security permissions (like mic or camera). It's unclear from your post whether your app is signed/entitled with the "com.apple.security.device.audio-input" key set to true.

I'm having issues distributing a standalone using a fork of an external (max-ble) which I compile myself.
I'm actually building the standalone on a 2015 macbook pro running catalina, and it doesn't work as expected on a recent M1 macbook running mac os 11, which of course I don't have access to.
I was still using Max 8.1.11 and everything worked fine except the scanning of BLE devices ([max-ble] seemed to work correctly but couldn't find any device), so I gave a try with Max 8.2.2 and apparently it doesn't even open any window anymore, except the console which doesn't display anything.
For information, I distribute the standalone by zipping it and uploading it to a public folder on my server.

Enabling the "rosetta" option on the standalone from the M1 apparently doesn't help in any case.

As suggested by Joshua, I tried to sign the standalone with the following Entitlements.plist file :

But then when I open the standalone on my machine, no object is found, everything is red and I get a load of error messages in the console, which seems to indicate that my entitlements somehow override default entitlements applied during the standalone build process.
Any further hints on the use of an entitlements file to sign a standalone ?
Any other advice would be much appreciated too.

It looks like things were going better with Max 8.1.11 (and the standalone size was much smaller : 64 Mo with Max 8.1.11 compared to 235 Mo with Max 8.2.2), so meanwhile I'll give another try with it and double check with my standalone user if he didn't do anything that could have prevented BLE devices to be discoverable.

I'm trying to teach mc to various groups of students, and I'm noticing some problems with the documentation of the exponential message.

The documentation page "Generating Message to the MC Wrapper" says :

[...] The first argument is the value of the exponent in the series and the second argument is the base that is raised to the exponent. [...]

I'm looking at the numbers that are generated and trying to calculate them myself, and what's actual happening is not what's stated. 

For the message "exponential [val1] [val2]"

 used as the increasing exponent for the natural exponential base over the number of channels, starting at 0. 

The base is e (2.71828), so for a 4 channel object, if val1 is 1, the exponent will start at 0 and then increase by -1 until 4 values are generated. This will be e^0, e^-1, e^-2, e^-3

This value is then multiplied by val2, which is the scale value, and not the "base that is raised to the exponent".

So for "exponential 1 10", the series is 

[10*e^0]  [10*e^-1]  [10*e^-2]  [10*e^-3] or

[20*e^0]  [20*e^2]  [20*e^4]  [20*e^6] or

I'm not sure why the exponent was multiplied by -1 in this implementation. I guess it was so that in the normal use case of scaling amplitudes down over channels, you wouldn't have to use a negative, but I think this is a false simplification, and it also makes the understanding of the arguments more complicated. As for the rest of the explanation in the ref page, I can imagine that since the reality is a bit complicated and difficult to explain, the simpler explanation was used, but if there's a place for the detailed information, it should be the reference pages...

Here's an idea for the reference text. Not perfect and still sounds a bit complicated, but more correct than the existing text.

To generate an exponentially increasing or decreasing series of values applied to all instances in the wrapper, use the exponential or scaledexponential messages. The first argument is the 

 used as the increasing exponent for the natural exponential base over the number of channels, starting at 0. The second argument is the 

 to be applied to the natural exponential result.

So for "exponential 1 10", the series is decreasing :

[10*e^0]  [10*e^-1]  [10*e^-2]  [10*e^-3] OR [10]  [3.679]  [1.353]  [0.498]

For "exponential -2 20", the series is increasing and the exponent steps by 2 each time:

A simpler explanation would be that the first argument is the step value for the exponent in the series and the second argument is the scaling value. Negative exponents cause values to increase over the series while positive exponents cause values to approach zero. The scaledexponential variant divides values in the series by the number of instances in the wrapper, resulting in an overall range that is independent of the number of instances.
