I put together a starter template for building Max externals with CMake.

It's a plain object box that adds two numbers. The object itself doesn't matter; it's there so the package is complete and buildable rather than a fragment. What you get is a CMake build that produces a universal binary and ad-hoc signs it, max-sdk-base wired up as a submodule so a --recursive clone builds immediately, the full package layout including a help patch and a reference page, and comments through the source explaining the non-obvious SDK calls.

The logic sits in a separate file that contains no Max code, with the object file handling only the Max side. Replacing that one file is most of what making your own object involves.

BUILD.md is probably the more useful part. It documents seven SDK behaviors that produce misleading symptoms rather than errors — three of them surface as no such object from completely unrelated causes, and one produces an Intel-only binary while still reporting a successful build. Each entry gives the symptom alongside the cause, since the symptom is what you'll have in front of you.

Verified on macOS, Apple Silicon. Windows is untested — nothing in it is deliberately mac-only, but I haven't built it there. :-)

Can anyone provide some code snippet or examples in C that deal with drag n drop of files (being the source) or has already done some investigation into that direction? I'm working on an old music piece that needs some externals from Eric Lyon's potpourri.

But all I could find online is 32bits only : I know the sources are available at https://github.com/ericlyon/LyonPotpourri3.0-MaxMSP but I don't know how to compile objects

Does anyone know where to find a 64 bits version of these externals ? Especially el.bashfest el.samm and el.mask

Or we could pay someone to compile it : please tell me if you're interested in this ...

Export Ableton Live Sessions to AAF for Any DAW or NLE

Version 2.1 of Abletonlive.aaf is now available, and it does the thing most of you asked for after v2.0: it goes the other way.

Up to now the app only converted AAF into Ableton Live Sets. Great if you were receiving work, no help at all if you were the one sending it. v2.1 adds 

 -- take your Live arrangement and send it to Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Resolve, Premiere or Sequoia. That was the "coming next" item on my last post, and it is now here.

- Ableton Live Set to AAF export, with seven targets

- Each AAF is written in that application's own dialect, not one generic file

- Target selector, plus timeline frame rate and sample rate

- Audio packaging choice -- copied to a samples folder beside the AAF, or embedded in one self-contained file

- Start offset -- shift a whole arrangement later by bars or seconds on import to Live

- Time-stretch detection -- warped clips are named so you can consolidate them in Live first

- Exported filenames carry target, sample rate and frame rate, so one session exported for four DAWs stops overwriting itself

- Pre-flight now flags MIDI tracks and tracks with effects, which AAF cannot carry

- Redesigned settings panel with every option in one place

- Universal, for anything else that reads AAF

All six were tested by importing the exported AAF into the actual application. That turned out to be most of the work -- each one wants the timeline, clip gain and media references expressed differently, and files that looked structurally perfect still landed wrong until they were checked for real.

- Clip positions and lengths, sample-accurate

- Your choice of frame rate and sample rate

 every export is bound by what that vendor's AAF implementation actually supports. AAF is not one universal format, it is a spec each application implements its own slice of, so what survives the trip depends on the destination as much as on the file. Fades and crossfades are the clearest example, and they are left out rather than exported into something that shifts your clip positions around. The app reports what it could not carry on every conversion, so you are never guessing.

- Clips played the wrong section of audio in Pro Tools and Sequoia

- Sample rate mismatch caused Cubase to reject the import

- Clip gain appeared as an automation lane in Sequoia and Logic Pro

- Logic Pro AAF files were analysed as empty

- Pro Tools and Logic Pro are now identified correctly by name

- Exported AAFs no longer reference Ableton's library folder, so they open on any machine

AAF to Ableton Live still does everything it did:

- Audio clip placement with accurate timing

- Volume automation, clip gain, fades and crossfades, markers

- DaVinci Resolve stereo tracks split into L/R channels

I have some custom-built externals which work perfectly fine in Max itself, but whenever I try to build a standalone with them I get "no such object" errors. I have tried including the .mxe64 files themselves and tried including the folder they're in. I've tried putting them in the main Max externals folder. I've tried building a collective instead of a standalone executable. I have verified that the .mxe64 files are actually present in the resources folder of the built standalone, but it just does not seem to matter (and I have tried manually moving them to the resources folder even though they already exist there). The strangest thing of all is that out of all the countless times I've tried to build, it actually did work maybe two or three times when I saved the patch as a project first and then built it. But I can't get that to work anymore now either. I have verified that it acts the same way on a different computer.

I feel like I've tried everything. Any ideas what could possibly be causing this?
