I know it gets brought up every once in a while, but I thought I'd post again to see what the interest was out there for getting Max working in Linux.

I jump between Mac, Winows, and Linux (Ubunutu) fairly regularly as no single OS can do everything I need under one roof. I teach at a university in physics and recording arts where I use Max, Wavelab, Nuendo, and Live extensively for demonstrations and PowerPoint/Keynote for presenting. I also run a recording/mastering/post studio where I again use Nuendo & Wavelab. But I also run an acoustic R&D company where I use Solidworks, QCAD, and a few other drawing/modeling tools. And lastly I head up an interdisciplinary research collective that mostly uses Max, but also vvvv, Processing, TouchDesigner, Quartz Composer, etc.

But I'm finding that I prefer Linux above Windows and Mac more and more for the sheer speed, customization, and adaptability even though it's by far the least supported for applications which really bums me out. While I'm a big supporter of open source I'm also happy to pay for good commercial software like Max. i just wish Max, and a few others, would run on Linux.

Max is one of the biggest hangups for me to not spend almost all of my time in Linux. PD is a great program, no doubt, but I rely on a lot of the awesome and amazing externals out there and the great Max community (along with a number of other reasons). Even getting Max to run under Wine would be OK, though native support would be much more preferable. But the iLok stuff only works on Mac/Win, even though I use the software key/internet activation.

So I'm interested if there's any other folks out there in the same boat as myself. I know Linux support is a low priority for most commercial companies that are trying squash bugs and be innovative, but I feel like Ubuntu and other flavors are on the rise and have some very cool potential in the multimedia realm (but that could also be just because I've been getting more into it personally). If there's enough of us requesting maybe we could see a Linux release in the future! Anyone else interested in seeing this happen?

since Ableton Live does handle audio and gui better/faster than Max I'd like to change back. But there is this sysex-problem leaving me doubts. It shouldn't be too hard to implement a straight through for Max' sysex? Did you hear sth about it to come in Live 9? And no, I don´t want to use Live + Max Standalone and virtual ports again.

Is there a way to get [nslider] just to show a single bass or treble staff?

My application has a range of about an octave, I don't need four staves to appear in my presentation. Looking for something nice and compact just to show which note is currently playing.

I can use panels to cover the unwanted sections, but it's still a bit awkward. For example, if I go down to the Bb below middle C, the panel that hides the top of the bass staff cuts off the bottom of the Bb. It's not a huge deal, but it's noticeable that something weird is going on in an otherwise clean looking app.

Just wondering if there's a better way. Thanks!

I've encountered some inconsistency when using the 'load' message to 'pcontrol' to load a patcher which contains a 'patcherargs' object:

If I try to pass arguments with the 'load' message (like 'load argtest foo bar'), all the #1, #2 etc. strings are correctly replaced as stated in the docs, however the 'patcherargs' object does not seem to see them. Is this expected?

Here's two simple patchers to demonstrate the issue. Save the first patcher in your max search path as 'argtest.maxpat', then click on the message box in the second patcher. You will notice that the 'print pos' in the loaded patcher does not print anything.

I have a patch that embed several instances of the same bpatcher with a grid inside. I can see in the pattrstrorage the pad on and off but when I save the patcher and reopen it this settings are not recalled.

I have named the grid with "#0-grid" but this does not work too.

I tried with an embeded bpatcher and the grid is properly saved and reloaded. But apparently not when the bpatcher is created outside. 

The one that does not work is bigger. So I am not sure I can copy it but this is the subpatch I try to embed:

I guess the problem is that I try to have several instances of this last one in one single patch. Let me know.

i'm an absolute max + osc beginner and i'm trying to control some parameters on my behringer x32 mixer. it's connected via a network cable. i have its ip and the port on which it receives — furthermore i have the OSC parameters. it's driving me nuts, because i have no clue how to connect to it, neither do i have a way to see if my udpconnection is even established..

can anybody give me a starter? attached is my embarrassing achievement so far :)

I'm re-working a large patch (Robert Henke's Granulator II) which contains many gen~ patchers--all "untitled" and thus saved with the main patch. Sometimes (too often now) after editing the contents of one gen~ patcher and saving, I find that the contents of other gen~ patchers have disappeared! I get about a dozen error messages, all saying "patchcord outlet out of range: deleting patchcord".

This is very frustrating, and it's happened many times. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm having a small issue that I think has a simple solution, but I can't seem to figure it out.

How can I distinguish an OSC message with an argument (say, /foo 28) from one without an argument (/foo)?

When I place a [Print] object as the output of an [OSC-route /foo] object and send a “/foo” message, I see it appear in the console with nothing—which means the OSC.route object is indeed returning something—but I can’t seem to find that “something” in the patch. It doesn’t appear to be a bang or anything else.

Since the driver setting has changed, so that I can access input and output devices separately, I can't access/change the output driver with adstatus. I need to create a standalone and want simply select the interface with ins and outs together, like it was in the old days.

The helpfile of adstatus doesn't provide any help and seems to be the same as the ancient one.
