Wondering if any of you smart people know how I might get dynamic string values displayed on my Push 3's screen as parameter names?

I've built quite a robust A/V performance system using Ableton/Push and Touchdesigner for visuals. On the Touchdesigner side, I dynamically load different visual generators based on the currently playing Live clip. Each visual has its own unique set of parameters. I control them via Macro dials on a TDA Rack device (Touchdesigner Ableton plugin which just sends dial values back & forth over OSC). I then perform live manipulation of the parameters via the knobs on Push. For system performance reasons, I reuse the same device Macro dials for each visual. This works great, but the names displayed on the Macros/Push are static. I want to be see what I am controlling from the Push display and have these names update when I switch between visuals.

I setup the send/receive of names over OSC, and updated some dial short-names using the hidden approach mentioned. When I change the names on my dials and they do display properly on the M4L device, BUT the new names don't update on the Push or any Macros dials in Live mapped to those dials.

First things first: this isn't my discovery, I'm just the messenger. u/El_Vikingo_ on Reddit noticed something weird with Max for Live and Looper. He 

 which I noticed and I can reproduce his issue. Better yet: I think I found a possible cause as well.

, and because of that we should have access to specific properties such as 

 (which is what Vikingo was after). The only problem: these properties aren't accessible.

I checked out the Looper device using my ancient LOM.Navigator device when I noticed something peculiar: if I check the classname of the device on a track then Looper comes back as Looper, nothing weird here. But if I check the canonical parent of a device parameter then it tells me that Looper is designated as Device, but that should have been LooperDevice. When I check the compressor for example then this "inner classname" does come back as CompressorDevice.

live_set tracks 1 devices 0 => classname is Looper.

live_set tracks 1 devices 0 parameters 0 canonical_parent => classname is Device, should be LooperDevice.

As mentioned, if I try this with a compressor or shifter, even a Max for Live device, then they all behave in the right manner. As such I suspect a bug here.

Here's my patch showing proof of concept...  just dump a couple of devices onto a track (make sure to include Looper ;)), add a M4l audio effect and use this code. Then just click the button and watch the output.

I'm using Live 12 suite, with the latest Max 8.6.2.

is it possible to drag and drop something like a "file path" of a wave file out of a M4L device (!) into a clip slot in the ableton live session view ?

I mean the functionality of the "live looper" plugin. There you can record audio and then drag and drop it into a clip slot. Also you can drag and drop a file out of a file browser into a clip slot... something like that.

I spent months building a concatenative synthesis device for Live 12 in

TypeScript on Node for Max, and the part that took longest wasn't the audio.

The device analyses a corpus, cuts it into ~90 ms grains, and rebuilds a target

sound out of them. At the end you want the result on pads, playable. The obvious

route is the Live API: make a Drum Rack, load a sample into each pad. It cannot

 wants a BrowserItem, and nothing turns a file path

into one — the browser tree only holds the User Library and folders the user

added. So the API route ends in "copy your sounds somewhere Live can see them and

go find them", which is a file browser detour by another name.

There is a straight road, and it's the one Live's own Convert commands drive on:

with every chosen sound laid end to end and hands over the exact sample offset

each one starts at. Nothing is detected or guessed at the other end: we wrote the

file, we know where the seams are, one pad per sound — where slicing by transient

would have found two in a snare with a long tail.

A few things that cost me time, in case they save you some:

  · the .adg is gzipped XML, and Live is unforgiving about element order

  · a jweb window is a WKWebView on macOS: 

    caret in every text input, silently, while Blink exempts form fields

  · with Live's audio engine off, node.script doesn't boot at all and the

 stays quiet, so the device has to say so

  · Max draws boxes first-to-last, so the FIRST box is the one in front

The idea is to see the v8ui in the m4l device and be able to zoom it in a floating window.
