let´s start with defer, which is relatively simple.

if you are in overdrive and connect

[metro]
[defer]

metro will output its data into the high priority thread of max runtime, but after defer it will be moved back to the main thread again. (to do the opposite you can use pipe 0. or del 0.)

so for example i sometimes do this:

[sequencer clocked, timecritical data in overdrive]
/ /
[defer]  [complicated math for audio DSP] 
/
[complicated math for GUI object] 

to free up some space in the scheduler thread.

some other things are more on a trial and error basis. for example defer and deferlow sometimes fix issues with loading files on patch init or queueing bugs around [bpatcher]

You might also have a look at the cousin object [jit.qball].
When you use defer objects, keep in mind this possible side effect: a carefully sequenced [t b b i b] will execute correctly in the high priority thread when triggered by, say, a MIDI event; now, if you connect a [defer]/[deferlow] on the rightmost outlet, then the order of execution will not be guarranteed.

thank you very much, I needed to know just these things.

@roman as I understand it, defer is used to switch from high priority thread to main thread, and pipe 0. or del 0. to do the reverse process. But why is the complicated math for audio DSPs (I imagine processes using FFT) left out of the high priority thread? Couldn't there be glitch problems in this case?

These are three different threads:
- the audio thread (MSP) is generally the highest priority
- the high priority Max events thread (things triggered by MIDI, [metro], etc.)
- the low priority Max events thread (things triggered by the mouse, [qmetro], etc.)
On this topic, the discussion I linked above is excellent.

The article Jean-Francois links to explains this, but the other wrinkle is that if you select "Audio Interrupt" in the audio status settings, then the high priority thread *is* the audio thread (thus there are only two threads), and that thread alternates between handing events on the high priority event queue and rendering the dsp vector. This may or may not be what you want, so worth testing out.

The GroupFlow Project, uses advanced sensors to measure what's happening in the breath and heart, then turns that data into light, sound and music acting as a form of collective self awareness. The group can merge into synchronized breathing, hear each other's heartbeat's, explore new tech augmented approaches to meditation and much more.

The Max/MSP system can accommodate up to 24 participants, requiring 27 independent channels of audio, 24 channels of sensor data, 24 LED channels, in addition to the over 500 LEDs in the physical space. This system is optimized for very low latency and is capable of providing real-time light and sound feedback.

Recently a private funder has supported a research collaboration with UC Santa Barbara which will require the development of new functionality as well as the operating of the system for experiments and events. 

This position would require taking over a large and advanced code base developed over years by multiple developers. The work would be in three parts:

This is not a simple or lightweight project. It would take significant energy to get up to speed and will require fluency not only in Max/MSP but deep understanding of audio signal processing and general good coding practices for large software systems efficiently handling numerous real-time data streams. 

We are looking for a part-time developer with a flexible schedule and the ability to occasionally travel. Candidate should be based in Southern California and able to regularly participate in events in Ojai, CA. The current funding has a fixed budget, but this project is expected to continue and grow. The ideal candidate is available with flexible hours and open to growing into a more regular work cadence as funding and project grow.

Hello all, im looking for a max msp advanced user to compose a patch for my project.

essentially im using an RGB sensor via my arduino that "reads" a spinning wood log very much like a turntable. i want to use the data from the sensor to generate a parametric sound system.

I'm working on a live show where I'm playing the score for film live, building it in loops & layers and also semi live-editing the accompanying video. 

One thing I've needed to do is to be able to hit a different midi pads throughout my setup that each can send a trigger to Resolume (VJ software) to play the next column of visuals on the next beat #1. Resolume has a device called Parameter Forwarder that sends a signal from Ableton to Resolume, so I've just created a very simple patch that can send the Parameter Forwarder a bang immediately when I hit a midi pad, or have the bang wait until the next beat #1. 

I am a total Max noob, but I figured it out enough to create a very basic patch and get it working most of the time, but there are still a few gremlins in the patch that are coming back to haunt me now that I'm starting to play the show for people live. Here are the issues: 

I've asked ChatGPT which had some thoughts but honestly I don't understand Max well enough to be able to implement the ideas. I would love to learn Max fully someday but I'm really daunted by the thought of it currently. I'd be super grateful for any insight you have. This patch is really important to this show that I'm making and I'd be happy to pay someone for their time helping me to make it more robust. I'd also be happy to do some kind of skill swap, I've learned a ton about Ableton and Resolume for this show and have been a filmmaker & video editor for 15 years in case any of that is helpful to you! 

Here is the patch that I created. I've also attached a photo showing how it's setup in Ableton. (First row are midi mappable buttons that send a next column signal to Resolume, second row of big circles send a next columnn signal to Resolume on the next beat #1)

Help w/M4L patch that sends trigger from Ableton to Resolume

Hello! I would love to know if someone could help me to modify an existing M4L device (Here: 

https://maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=4123#25440

) to allow it to update its parameters to reflect the state of the synth, after a program change. It currently shows changes when tweaking a knob, but doesn't "snap" to those knob's actual settings upon changing a patch.

Is this even possible? I am an absolute neophyte when it comes to programming and realize this may not be something I can implement myself but would love to have some help. Would even be willing to pay someone to create/edit this for me!
