Hi folks, I’m attempting to override a subset of Push2s default controls from within a Max for Live Device. With minimal success. The documentation states for ‘grab_control’ that “

But when I grab_control anything, such as Push’s control named Global_Mute_Button, I don’t get any control from within my Max for Live Device. Instead the corresponding MIDI CC/Note message goes into the sequencer inputs (e.g. the “Ableton Push 2 (Live Port)” input, MIDI CC 60 in the case of the Global_Mute_Button). This hardly seems “used exclusively via Max for Live” and is not helpful for an Audio-type devices (which can’t get that MIDI info).

When I enable “grab_midi” on Push2, I get MIDI outputs direct from the [live.object] in my device. Similar output from something in my device is more-or-less what I am expecting is possible when I use grab_control. (The grab_midi output itself is problematic for me because it doesn’t disable to default functionality of the Global_Mute_Button. And if I grab_control the Global_Mute_Button, then grab_midi stops reporting the MIDI changes corresponding to that control).

Am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to be able to work?

I'm a total newbie and I'm trying to design a small instrument that has a polyphonic sample midi functionality to be used as a backend for a certain application.

I want it to be able to do the following:

- load samples from a directory in sorted order

- given an input message i, T, trigger a sample of id i and play it for a duration T (T is a factor of bpm and should be always capped to the max sample size) - polyphonic because in the sense that if id_t = a starts now I don't want it be interrupted if id_{t+1} = b starts on the next beat (and sample hasn't finished yet) - all this with a != b (otherwise it's ok to retrigger - exactly like a polyphonic sampler.)

This seems an easy thing to do if I was coding it python but I have no idea how to do it in max :(

im working on a rather large orchestral template in ableton. there are groups for the main sections: strings, brass, woods, percussion etc and inside each of those, there are many many tracks. for example with the strings group: violas, violins, string effects, etc.. upwards of 30-50 tracks inside a section group. and of course a bunch of automation lanes under each of those tracks. so when working on a rather complicated arrangement where you have a ton of clips for all those tracks, it becomes cumbersome to have to manually scroll up and down to be able to get to each section's clips. question: is there a way with live 11's api to be able to jump the arrangement view - vertically - to a specific group or track?

i know we can already jump horizontally via adding keyboard shortcuts to locators. but would be a HUGE timesaver during the composing process to get keyboard keys or midi keys to allow us to jump the arrangement window vertically up or down to specific tracks/groups. 

perhaps there's already a m4l device that handles this?

(p.s. did a search here/google but couldn't find anything related to this (possibly it's just burried))

So I stumbled upon MAX for the first time today. I've been exploring/reading help files, combing through the forums... I'm really just trying to understand some very basic fundamentals here...

Can I export what I make in MAX to a VST format or a stand-alone plugin of some kind? 

From what I can tell the answer seems like no. At least, not directly. The closest thing is it appears as though (perhaps with the release of 8.5) I can export to C++ which I imagine I could then theoretically turn into a VST with some additional programming. There in lies the rub though...

In case it wasn't blatantly obvious from the above commentary, I know next to nothing about "coding" at least not in the traditional sense. I like to make music for fun... I'm not interested in learning to code to be honest. I am however interested in creating my own instruments. MAX being a visual programming tool seemed like it would potentially be a great place for me to start. However, if the barrier for taking whatever I make in max and making it a stand alone plugin or VST is too high - then perhaps it isn't for me after all. I don't want whatever I make in MAX to have to stay in MAX. 

As I understand it - this is basically the "easy answer" to all of the above. If I have Ableton then MAX for Live would allow me to essentially quickly bridge the gap from what I make in MAX over to Ableton Live... is that an accurate assessment? If that's really the only way to get whatever I make in MAX out into a DAW environment - then I suppose that's what I'll need to do. I'm just not currently a Ableton Live user... So I'd need to learn that as well. Currently I use Cubase, Reason, and FLStudio.

Again, I'm brand new. Please take that in to consideration when responding. If you think I'm an idiot or that I shouldn't ask questions like this... or that I should have done X ... or Y ... or Z before posting this, then please just move along. I'm not here to waste anyone's time - and I'd rather not be flamed. Sorry If I'm coming across as overly cautious about all that - it's just because, well let's be honest; We all know how the internet works. In my experience there is literally no nook where you can go without receiving some sort of unrequested criticism for something.

"Max documents (named patchers) can be bundled into stand-alone applications and distributed free or sold commercially. In addition, Max can be used to author audio and MIDI 

This to me suggests that people are indeed exporting what they make in MAX and even selling it. I'd be curious to hear what different methods people are using to accomplish this. Specifically the task of creating something that can be sold commercially and in particular to the larger masses that may not be users of MAX.

If you made it this far. I appreciate you reading. From reading the above - do you think MAX is worth me getting into experimenting with and that I'll be able to accomplish what I'd like to? If not and you have a recommendation for a different visual coding platform that may be better - please let me know. If you've gotten this far and you're chomping at the bit to tell me how much of a "douche" I am... or a "noob" ... or (insert whatever pejorative here) and how my post irritated/irritates you. You can, but just know that you'll be hurting some random sensitive person's feelings for no reason. Lol

so when 1 is received counter is start to count in ms. when 0 is received counter is
